Men's Swimming Drops First Patriot League Meet To Army

Lewisburg, Pa. --- This past weekend the Bucknell men's and women's swimming and diving teams held a home meet versus Army on Saturday, October 28. Both squads swam well but were unable to defeat the Black Knights.
The men's team fell to Army by a score of 157-86 in the Patriot League meet. The Bison had two individuals win their respective races in the 50-yard freestyle and the 200-yard backstroke. Junior Chris Neary (Philadelphia, Pa./Central) finished first in the 50-yard freestyle event with a time of 21.82, his second victory in the event this season. Also winning an event for the men's team was freshman Jack Sheehan (Wenonah, N.J./Gateway Regional) in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:00.34. Sheehan was the leading points getter for the Bison with 11 on the afternoon.
The men's team also performed well in the two relay events, taking second place in the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 3:34.32 and first place in the 400-yard freestyle relay clocking in at 3:11.63. The victorious members of the 400-yard freestyle relay team were senior Jeff Sharpe (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) and John Ferriter (Yorktown, Va./Hampton Roads Academy), Neary and freshman Peter Garvin (Silver Springs, Md./Our Lady of Good Council).
The women's team swam a strong meet, however, came up a little bit short losing to Army 144-97. The team gained its only first place finishes in the two relay events. The 400-yard medley relay foursome of Golino, sophomore Lauren Mosler (Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes), senior Molly Lowe (Hamilton Square, N.J./Steinert), and freshman Meghan Freese (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) won the event with a time of 4:05.81. In the 400-yard freestyle relay, which Army swam as an exhibition, the Bison foursome of Freese, freshman Anna Sommers (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West),freshman Lynne Ashenfelter (Glen Ridge, N.J./Glen Ridge), and Weaver won with a time of 3:40.84.
Notable individual performances for the women's team came from junior Abby Weaver (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) and sophomore Darby Golino (Milford, Conn./Our Lady of Academy). Weaver finished second in the 100-yard and 200-yard freestyle events, accumulating eight points for the Orange and Blue. Her time in the 100-yard freestyle was 54.15 and she finished with a time of 1:58.05 in the 200-yard freestyle. Golino also had a strong meet as she finished second in both the 200-yard IM (2:14.64) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:10.51).
The men's and women's teams drop to 1-1 on the season and 0-1 in conference action. The two teams will compete this coming weekend at Drexel on November 4 at 2:00 p.m.
