LEWISBURG, Pa. - Junior Dena Ebert (West Long Branch, N.J./Shore Regional) scored two goals, including the game-winner in overtime, as the Bucknell field hockey team handed Lock Haven a 2-1 overtime loss on Tuesday, October 3. The Lady Eagles are ranked first in the latest Division II national poll released earlier today.
With 16:45 remaining in the first half, Lock Haven's Shanna Vitale scored on a penalty corner to give the Lady Eagles an early 1-0 lead. That lead would hold until halftime.
Just ten minutes into the second stanza, Ebert connected with a pass from senior tri-captain Maura Higgs (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) to knot the score at 1-1. After playing the rest of regulation without a score, the two teams headed into the extra session for the second year in a row.
With just 3:30 remaining in the first overtime, Ebert scored off a pass from classmate Lauren Campbell (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) to give the Bison the 2-1 victory.
"It was a good victory considering the tough loss we had just suffered to Lehigh on Saturday," commented Bucknell head coach Heather Lewis. "I'm happy because we had tired legs and we still found a way to win."
Bucknell improves to 6-5 on the season and opens a three-game road stretch. BU travels to Penn State to play Indiana on Friday, October 7, before heading to James Madison on October 9 and Penn State on October 11. Lock Haven falls to 10-2 on the year. It is the second-straight year the Bison have handed the Lady Eagles their second loss of the season.
