
Men's Swimming Handles Bloomsburg 170-89

Bloomsburg, Pa. --- Bucknell's men's and women's swimming
teams opened their respective seasons with victories over Bloomsburg
University this evening, Tuesday, October 24.
The men's team defeated Bloomsburg rather easily by a score
of 170-89. Out of 14 total events, the Bison managed to take
first place in 11 of those events. The only two members on the
team to be victorious in more than one event were junior Chris
Neary (Philadelphia, Pa./Central) and sophomore Gonzalo
Diaz (Miami, Fla./Ransom Everglades). Neary was the top finisher
in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 21.86 and also in the
100-yard butterfly with a time of 54.35. Diaz earned his two
top spots in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:01.35 and
the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:01.62.
Other first-place finishers for the men's team were senior
Justin Schwarz (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire) in the 1000-yard
freestyle (10:22.84), freshman Michael Harrigan (Doylestown,
Pa./La Salle College HS) in the 100-yard backstroke (1:00.47),
freshman Peter Garvin (Silver Spring, Md./Our Lady of Good
Counsel) in the 100-yard freestyle (48:44), freshman Jack
Sheehan (Wenonah, N.J./Gateway Regional) in the 200-yard backstroke
(2:01.32), sophomore Stephen Schwanhausser (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield)
in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:17.83), and the 200-yard medley
relay team (1:38.76).
The women's team also pulled out the victory in similar fashion
to the men by a score of 170-89. In the 12 events that the Bison
competed in, every single result found a Bucknell swimmer in first
place. Three individuals from the team managed to touch the wall
first in more than one event. Junior Abby Weaver (Lititz,
Pa./Warwick) won the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 54.80
and the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1:58.31. Also winning
two events for the Orange and Blue was senior Molly Lowe (Hamilton
Square, N.J./Steinert) in the 100- and 200-yard butterfly
events with times of 1:01.01 and 2:12.67. Freshman Meghan
Freese (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) had a solid first
meet by finishing first in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of
25.51 and the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:14.61.
Other first place finishers for the women's team were junior
Barbara Morgan (Toms River, N.J./Toms River) in the 200-yard
breaststroke (2:34.32), sophomore Lauren Mosler (Palos Verdes,
Calif./Palos Verde) in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:11.01),
sophomore Darby Golino (Milford, Conn./Our Lady of Academy)
in the 100-yard backstroke (1:01.65), freshman Krisztina Poda
(Bekescasaba, Hungary/Rozsa Ferene) in the 1000-yard freestyle
(11:01.76), freshman Daniela Faas (Ludwigshafen, Germany/Worcester
Academy) in the 500-yard freestyle (5:19.29), and the 200-yard
medley relay team (1:53.59).
Both teams managed the competition well for the first meet
of the season and will have their first test this weekend against
Army. The swimming team will host Army on Saturday, October 28
at 1:00 p.m. and 11:00 a.m. for diving.
