LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell men's soccer team moved
to 6-1-1 on its home field with an exciting 0-0 double overtime
tie against visiting Stony Brook on Tuesday, October 17.
The two teams battled through a cold rain the entire game, making
for a sloppy game at times. The Bison dominated the first half
of play, holding an 8-5 advantage in shots at halftime, and a
4-1 edge in corner kicks at the break.
The Seawolves seemed to settle into their offense-oriented game
after the intermission, outshooting Bucknell 10-2 in the second
stanza. The Orange and Blue defense proved solid, however, making
big plays to prevent Stony Brook to get the advantage.
After 90 minutes of scoreless soccer, the two teams battled through
an additional 30 minutes in two overtimes before ending in the
0-0 draw.
"I think a tie was fitting for the way these two teams played
today," commented Bucknell head coach Brendan Nash. "We
outplayed them in the first half, but they came out with more
intensity in the second to keep the game in check."
Bison goalkeeper Steve Whitaker (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga) picked
up his fifth shutout of the season, improving to 6-2-2 on the
year and 5-0-1 at home in 2000.
Bucknell moves to 7-6-2 overall. The Orange and Blue travel to
South Carolina for the Iron Kids Soccer Classic on Saturday and
Sunday, October 21-22. The Bison will face #8 South Carolina
in the opening round at 5:00 p.m., before challenging the College
of Charleston on Sunday at 12:00 noon. Stony Brook, which just
dropped out of the national rankings this week, moves to 9-1-2
overall.
