Lewisburg Pa. --- The Bucknell field hockey team suffered
a 2-1 defeat to Patriot League foe Lehigh this afternoon on the
Bucknell West Fields. The loss drops the team to a 5-5 overall
record and a 2-2 tally in conference play.
Even thought the Orange and Blue held a 14-3 advantage in penalty
corners over the Mountain Hawks, they were only able to manage
one goal. The lone tally for the Bison came off the stick of
junior Melissa Maher (Marcy, N.Y./Whitesboro) with 8:20
left in the second half. The goal was her team leading fifth
of the season.
Lehigh was the first to break the 0-0 tie when sophomore Shelley
Trumbore (Souderton, Pa./Souderton) scored off a penalty corner
with a lift shot to the upper corner of the goal. Assisting on
the goal was junior Jennifer Lehman (West Chester, Pa./Unionville).
The Mountain Hawks scored again with only 4:45 left in the contest
off a blast from junior Cindy Tindall (Tabernacle, N.J./Shawnee)
from the top of the circle. The tally would turn out to be the
game-winner for the Mountain Hawks.
Bucknell sophomore goalkeeper Sonja Wettergreen (Norwalk,
Conn./Brien McMahon) had four saves in the contest. Lehigh
sophomore netminder Margo Smith (Belle Mead, N.J./Princeton Day
School) faced 13 shots in the contest and turned away 12 of them.
The field hockey team is now 5-5 on the season and holds a .500 record of 2-2 in Patriot League action. The Orange and Blue will play again this Tuesday, October 3 at 7:00 p.m. when they host Lock Haven on the Bucknell West Fields.
