Aiken, S.C. --- This evening the Bucknell men's soccer
team pulled off the unexpected by defeating nationally ranked
South Carolina 2-1 in overtime at the Iron Kids Soccer Classic.
South Carolina was ranked 8th in the nation before the playing
of tonight's contest.
In a close game, the Bison found themselves looking up at 1-0
deficit in the second half after South Carolina broke the scoreless
tie with 41:31 left in regulation. Responding well to the pressure,
senior Geza Lendvai-Lintner (Madison, N.J./Madison) passed
the ball to sophomore Nick Taylor (Fairview Park, Ohio/St.
Ignatius) who managed to slip the ball past the Gamecock goalkeeper
for the Orange and Blue's first tally of the contest. This goal
would turn out to be an important score as it eventually would
force the contest into overtime.
As the Bison took to the field with nationally ranked South
Carolina in overtime, Coach Nash told his team to ,"...
keep your composure and take any opportunities they give you and
capitalize on them when they do." This is just what the
Orange and Blue did only 3:40 into the first overtime. Senior
tri-captain Bill Epley (Franklinville, N.J./Delsea Regional)
headed the ball past the South Carolina goalkeeper for the game-winner
and the upset. Recording assists on the game-winning goal were
sophomore Elliott Maruffi-Cowley (North Branford, Conn./North
Branford) and Taylor.
Freshman goalkeeper Steve Whitaker (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga)
was able to keep the Gamecock offense at bay throughout most of
the contest allowing only one goal while recording five saves.
The men's soccer team improves to 8-6-2 with the upset and will play again tomorrow versus the College of Charleston at 12:00 noon.
