West Point, N.Y. --- Bucknell scored two goals in the first 12:20 of the match and sophomore goalkeeper Laurie Purse (Traverse City, Mich./Western Reserve Academy) made them stand up with an eight-save shutout, as the Bison stopped Army 3-0 in a Patriot League contest at Clinton Field on Saturday night.
Sophomore Tara Utchel (Heidelberg, Pa./Sewickley) had a goal and two assists and freshman Savannah Rennels (Rector, Pa./Latrobe Area) added one of each, including the icebreaking tally just 3:38 into the contest. Freshman Kristie Simon (LaGrange, Ill./Lyons Township) added some insurance with just over 12 minutes remaining in the second half when she took the ball away from Army keeper Sara Johnson and scored into an empty net for the eighth time this season.
The Black Knights' were able to keep the ball in the Bucknell end for much of the game but could not finish several excellent scoring chances. Lauren Rowe had the ball in front of the net on three occasions in the second half and was unable to put any of them past Bison goalkeeper Purse.
Purse made eight saves in the contest while recording her fourth shutout of the season. Johnson made seven saves for Army, which held a 19-17 shot advantage and a 10-2 edge in corner kicks.
Bucknell improves to 7-5-1 overall and 3-1-1 in Patriot League play. The win moves the Orange and Blue into sole possession of second place in the conference. The women's soccer team will play next this Wednesday, October 18, when it travels to Philadelphia, Pa. to play against Villanova at 3:00 p.m.
