Bill Courtney was the co-captain of the "Breakin' Bison" men's basketball team that advanced to the Patriot League championship game in 1992, and he is one of the top scorers in program history. As a junior he set the school single-season scoring record with 619 points, and he also led the team in assists that season. His 1,499 career points ranked fifth in school history at the time of his graduation. A First Team All-Patriot League selection in 1991 and 1992, Courtney's 14.6 points-per-game average ranked in the top 10 in program history. He once scored 37 points in a game against Saint Francis (Pa.), and he also held school records for career free throws made (400) and most 20-point games in a season (16 in 1990-91). Courtney was a freshman on Bucknell's 1989 NCAA Tournament team, and over his four seasons the Bison compiled a 77-44 record. After playing professionally in Hong Kong, where he was named his league's MVP, as well as in the USBL and with the Milwaukee Bucks' summer league team, Courtney returned to college basketball as a successful coach. He was head coach at Cornell from 2010-16 and has been an assistant coach at several mid-major and major-conference schools. Courtney came to Bucknell from Robert E. Lee High School in Virginia.
