Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame
Marchetti Jr., Thomas M.

Thomas M. Marchetti Jr.
- Induction:
- 2009
- Class:
- 1991
Sport: Wrestling
Tom Marchetti was a three-time qualifier for the NCAA Wrestling Championships, and as a sophomore in 1989 he became Bucknell's very first wrestling All-American when he placed fourth at 167 pounds in Oklahoma City. He was the highest-placing non-seeded wrestler in the tournament and the only sophomore to place in the top four in any weight class. Marchetti earned three consecutive conference titles from 1989-91, and he was named Outstanding Wrestler at the 1990 East Coast Conference Championships. He went 12-0 in dual matches and 29-3 overall as a junior, when he fell one NCAA win shy of a second straight All-America plaque. As a senior, Marchetti eclipsed his own single-season record with 31 wins (fellow Hall-of-Famer Bryan Burns later finished with 32 wins that season) against only six losses and also set a team mark with 19 pins. He won his third straight conference title, this time in the East Coast Wrestling Association, and was seeded ninth at the NCAA Championships. He won his opening match, then suffered a broken hand in the first period of his second-round bout and dropped the next two.Â
Marchetti graduated as Bucknell's all-time winningest wrestler with a 106-24 mark, and he also held the career record with 41 pins. A graduate of Easton (Pa.) High School, Marchetti was a Freshman All-American after going 21-7 in his first year at Bucknell, when he was an ECC runner-up, and he was nationally ranked in each of his final three seasons. A Christy Mathewson Award winner as the top senior athlete in his class, Marchetti was a two-year team captain. Bucknell posted a 38-20 dual-meet record during his career and finished as the conference runner-up three times. He was Bucknell's fifth wrestling Hall of Famer.
