Harry L. Lawrence
- Induction:
- 1983
- Class:
- 1951
Sport: Football Coach
Harry Lawrence was head football coach at Bucknell from 1947-57, a tenure longer than that of any other football coach at the school at the time. His overall record was 45-51-1, and the victory total was also an all-time high for Bucknell until being surpassed years later.
Lawrence's 1951 team finished 9-0 for one of only two undefeated, untied records in the University's history, and that team averaged 463.3 yards per game total offense to break an Eastern record set by the 1945 Army team featuring Glenn Davis and Doc Blanchard. Numerous players from that team have been elected to the Bucknell Athletic Hall of Fame. The 1951 team also contributed to a school-record winning streak of 17 games, and from 1949-52 Lawrence's Bucknell teams won 27 of 35 games. Lawrence's 1951 squad received plenty of national recognition, including a top-20 national ranking and three All-Americans, including first-teamer George Young.
Lawrence graduated from Western Maryland College, where he played football under the famed Dick Harlow and was also on the baseball, basketball, lacrosse and rifle teams. He was elected to the school's Sports Hall of Fame in 1977. Lawrence played minor league baseball briefly following graduation and began his coaching career at Baltimore City College High School in 1934. In nine years there (interrupted by four years of service in World War Il) his teams compiled a 69-10-6 record, won eight Baltimore Public School championships and six Maryland School titles, and had a 54-game unbeaten string.
Lawrence, who rose to the rank of Lieutenant Commander in the Navy during World War I, completed work for a master of science in education degree while at Bucknell.
