Field Hockey Moves to 3-0 with 2-1 Win over Quinnipiac

LEWISBURG, Pa.- Bella Notaro found the net, Julia Corropolese recorded a defensive save, and Bucknell field hockey moved to 3-0 for the first time since 2003 in a 2-1 victory over Quinnipiac (1-2) on Friday night. Bucknell dominated the first half but only led 1-0. Quinnipiac tied the game after halftime but Notaro's goal and Corropolese's clutch defensive play kept the Bison undefeated and matched the program's fourth-best start all-time.

"It's exciting to hear," said head coach Kelsey Usefara, who moved into sole possession of fourth place on Bucknell's all-time wins list with 34, passing Bobbi Testa (1973-1977), the program's inaugural head coach. "But the girls deserve it. I think, again, we're all playing really well. I think we're really bought in as a group. Their hard work is paying off and there's still work to be done. But I'm proud of them."

Three classes of Bison constituted Notaro's goal. Freshman Carolyn Schiavo swiped the sphere from a Bobcat and passed it to Ryane Fisahn. The senior alertly looked upfield and saw Notaro breaking away. The veteran Bison delivered a perfect pass to the junior. During its flight, a Bobcat lunged at the ball but whiffed. Notaro collected the pass, lured the goalkeeper off her line, and shot a rocket into the cage for the 2-1 lead.

"My thoughts were definitely just to stay low," Notaro said. "Coach Usefara always tells me that. It is something I've been trying to work on and also just like trying to stay composed. It was a great ball from Ryan and Carolyn, I'm sure, was in the right place as well."

Quinnipiac kept clawing and pulled its goalkeeper with six minutes remaining. The Bison were under siege but generally kept the Bobcats at bay. Quinnipiac broke through with a 1:20 left, as Evelyn Henderson poked a shot past goalkeeper Sarah Althouse. Senior defender Julia Corropolese was there for the game-defining defensive save and the Bobcats never received another chance.

"As soon as I saw it, I just went for it," Corropolese said. "I didn't really think much about it. I just saw the ball loose, I was there and saw the other girl. So I just went for it."

Sally Hunter started the scoring with a second quarter goal, as part of Bucknell's overall domination in the first half. The Bison outshot the Bobcats 10-1. The opportunity came via a penalty corner, one of Bucknell's eight on the day. Aubrey DelOrefice took the initial shot. It bounced off goalkeeper Meike van Schoot's thick padding. Hunter collared the ricochet and fired the ball past the distracted goalie for the opening score.

The Bison's inability to build a larger lead opened the door for Quinnipiac to tie the game. The Bobcats scored 31 seconds after halftime when Rozemarijn van Keulen attempted a long range shot that flew past Althouse and equalized the score at 1-1.

For the third straight game, the scoresheet favored Bucknell. The Orange & Blue outshot Quinnipiac 15-3 and generated eight penalty corners to the Bobcats' two. Althouse did not record a save but made several of what she termed "preventive saves" by coming off her line and deterring any shot attempts.

Bucknell faces Ivy League power Cornell on Sunday at 2 p.m. The Bison won the last matchup 3-2 in overtime back in 2024. The Big Red only dropped four games in 2025, three of which were to Final Four teams. A win would move Bucknell to 4-0 for the first time since 1983.

"Cornell is always a really great challenge," Usefara said. "What a fantastic opportunity for us again. It's great, great competition to help us get ready for Patriot League play. So we're excited to have another opportunity."
