Roskos, Lillis Strike Early in 2-1 Win Over Saint Joseph's

LEWISBURG, Pa. – After conceding an early goal, Drew Roskos and Mason Lillis scored just minutes later to help the Bison to a 2-1 win over Saint Joseph's on Tuesday night at Emmitt Field. All three goals in the match were scored in the first 15 minutes of the match as the Bison held strong defensively for the final 75 minutes.

Bucknell (3-4-1) has gone unbeaten in the previous four matches after an 0-4 start to the season. The Bison finished up a four-game home stand where they went 3-0-1 in that span. This was Saint Joseph's (3-1-4) first loss of the season after going unbeaten in the first seven matches.

"I really think we played well in the first four matches of the season," said head coach Dave Brandt. "We really did and it was just mistakes that we can't make. I think those mistakes are decreasing and we need that to be competitive. I'm very pleased with that in recent matches."

Bucknell's two goals came against Alex Smith, who came into the match with an .867 save percentage and just four goals conceded through seven matches. The two goals were also Bucknell's first first-half goals of the season.

"The goals come when they come," said Brandt. "We had numerous chances and the two early goals were great, but we needed to score a third. We had the chances and that third goal would have changed the game and made it easier to control in the in the ending."

The Hawks showed the Bison an early press, but the Orange and Blue handled it well in the early going. The Bison threatened to break the Saint Joe's back line, but the momentum turned after an early mistake by the Bison.

In the eighth minute, Mason Csapo intercepted a pass from the Bison back line. The midfielder sent Eddie Krupski through on goal and the forward tucked away an easy finish for a 1-0 lead.

The early goal did not sway the Bison as they came right back down the field to score just 65 seconds later. Noah Handzel worked his way down the wing and played a pass back to Kasper Piela in support. Piela sent in a brilliant cross that found the head of Roskos. Roskos won the header over a taller defender, propping the ball up to himself for an easy finish to draw the Bison level 1-1.

Bucknell continued to press forward on the attack and Roskos nearly struck again minutes later, but his shot sailed just high. On the ensuing goal kick, the Bison won back possession that led to the second goal.

Roskos won another fifty-fifty ball and slotted a pass through to Hamish Riddell. The freshman wing back darted down the wing and into the box. He played a perfect pass into the box that found Lillis who found the back of the net with a strong finish in a crowd of defenders.

Bucknell held strong defensively, not allowing just one shot on target until the Hawks had two in the final five minutes of play. The Bison had plenty of opportunities to score but many fizzled out in the end.

The best chance of the half came from Roskos again who was inches away from a brace. With possession at the top of the box, Roskos cut towards the middle and fired a low shot that smashed the left upright. It deflected towards Viktor Permyashkin, but the Lewisburg native could not get his foot to it to put the opportunity away.

Saint Joseph's almost punished the Bison for not scoring on several opportunities with two big chances in the final five minutes. The Hawks had a great spell of possession in the final 10 minutes, and Nick Hanushchak nearly capped it off with a goal if not for Thomas Yerbury's first save of the match. Hanushchak fired his shot to the near post, and Yerbury got big to deny the chance.

Yerbury came up big once again in the final moments of the match as the Hawks fired a shot with seconds remaining. The Hawks pushed forward and picked out a pass to the team's leading goal scorer Conor Clair. Clair hit his shot from 25 yards out, but Yerbury did well to make a stop on a short-hop and keep the ball within arms reach to see out the match.

The Hawks had 20 shots in the match with five shots on goal while the Bison had 11 shots with seven on target. Yerbury made four saves in the match while Smith had five for the Hawks.

Roskos and Lillis each scored their first goal of the season. After an early season injury to Bucknell's leading goal scorer in 2025, Roskos is back on the scoresheet for the first time in 2026 with a goal and an assist. Lillis' goal was the second of his career.

"For Drew and several other guys who had injuries, they've battled to get minutes under their belt and find a rhythm," said Brandt. "It was great for Mason to get on the score sheet. He's always a hard worker, and hopefully gives himself more chances."

Bucknell is back in action in the Patriot League on Sunday on the road at Boston University for a 1 p.m. kickoff at Nickerson Field.
