Women’s Soccer Opens Patriot League Play with 3-1 Win over Lehigh

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Louisa Thomsen and Ingrid Murphy scored first-half goals less than four minutes apart, and Dani Howard scored an important insurance goal in the 71st minute to lift the Bucknell women's soccer team to a 3-1 win over Lehigh in the Patriot League openers for both sides on Saturday afternoon at Emmitt Field at Holmes Stadium.
The Bison (4-5-1) dominated play for much of the match, outshooting Lehigh (0-7-1) 33-7, including a 20-1 disparity in the first half. Bucknell was buzzing right from the opening touch but needed 28 minutes to get on the scoreboard. Thomsen had just been robbed by Lehigh goalkeeper Chloe Zipprich, who went high to tip her sliding shot over the bar. But on the ensuing corner kick, Thomsen headed home Murphy's service for her second goal of the season.
Seconds later, Gaby Parker got in behind the back line but was denied by Zipprich, and then only three minutes after that, Murphy scored a goal of the year candidate. Emma Gavin switched fields to Clare Nemsick, who send a ball forward to Murphy. The freshman, who came off the bench after missing the previous game with an injury, shielded off her defender and curled in a 30-yard shot to the top right corner.
Lehigh was much brighter in the second half and nearly scored just past the hour mark when Macy McCallum's shot went straight down off the crossbar and spun out. Parker, who led all players with seven shots in 41 minutes of action, just missed wide after Leah DeLaurentiis stole a square ball and played her in, and then the Bison found their third goal on a scrum in the box moments later.
Thomsen's close range shot was blocked and popped out to Howard, who settled at the top of the box and slotted a left-footed shot just inside the right post for her second goal of the season.
Lehigh spoiled Sarah McFarland's shutout bid with a penalty kick in the 84th minute. Ella Pomaranski drew a foul in the box, and Rylie Moschella converted from the spot.
Thomsen and Murphy both had two goal involvements with a goal and an assist apiece. Thomsen also launched seven shots and won numerous balls in the midfield. McFarland had two saves while Zipprich made six stops for Lehigh.
Now 6-0-2 in its last eight games against Lehigh, Bucknell returns to action next Saturday at home against Holy Cross at 2 p.m.
