LEWISBURG, Pa. – Charlie Barrickman, an incoming freshman on the Bucknell men's golf team, will spend his final week of summer break teeing it up at the 126th U.S. Amateur Championship at famed Merion Golf Club in the Philadelphia area. Barrickman, a West Chester native who made his mark as one of the area's top junior golfers, will have to commute only about 20 minutes to Merion to compete for the country's top amateur prize, the Havemeyer Trophy.
The championship will take place from Aug. 10-16, with Merion's East Course and the Philadelphia Country Club co-hosting 36 holes of stroke play. The 312-player field will then be trimmed to 64 competitors for five days of match play to determine the champion. Peacock, NBCSN, and NBC will have television coverage starting with the match play Round of 64 on Wednesday, Aug. 12.
Barrickman's journey to Merion began on June 24 in local qualifying at Huntingdon Valley Country Club, where he carded a 1-under-par 69 to grab one of the 12 advancing spots. Barrickman made three straight birdies at holes 5-6-7 to get his round going, and another birdie at the 577-yard, par-5 15th hole helped cement a solid T-3rd finish, one shot behind the co-medalists.
Barrickman played his Final Qualifier at the Scarlet Course at Ohio State, and after posting a 1-under 70, he made it through a 7-for-5 playoff. He made an eagle at the par-5 12th hole to go along with three birdies, and then a par on the third playoff hole helped him earn the final ticket to Merion.
Barrickman, who plays out of Radley Run Country Club, has enjoyed a decorated junior career. He helped his Unionville High School squad capture the PIAA 3A state championship last fall, and he was selected as the 2025 Golf Association of Philadelphia (GAP) Junior Player of the Year. Earlier this summer, he was an alternate for the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship, and he placed third at the Pennsylvania Golf Association Junior Championship after posting a 9-under 204 (71-67-66) at Hershey Country Club.
The Bison men's golf team will have three new additions this fall, with Barrickman, Conner Freedman (Chapel Hill, N.C.), and Brad McDermott (Wayne, Pa.) joining the squad. Bucknell debuts on Sept. 5-6 at Colgate's Alex Lagowitz Memorial at Seven Oaks GC in Hamilton, N.Y.
