WEST POINT, N.Y. – Tyler Seidman and Hadley Maxwell combined for a one-hit shutout on the mound as the Bucknell baseball team picked up an important 8-0 win in the series finale over Army at Doubleday Field on Sunday evening. With the win, the Bison clinched a Patriot League playoff berth and maintained their lead in the standings.
Army (22-16, 12-8 PL) and Navy (26-14, 13-7 PL) closed the gap on Bucknell's (21-18, 14-6 PL) three-game lead as the Black Knights took the first three games of the series from the Bison. Bucknell's win gave the Bison sole possession atop of the standings at 14-6 with Navy just one game back and Army two games back. With Navy's Sweep over Holy Cross (16-23, 10-10 PL), the Crusaders are now four games back.
The Bison clinched a Patriot League playoff berth after missing the postseason in 2025. Bucknell has just two series left to play, beginning with a three-game set against Navy at Depew Field at Marren Park next weekend.
Seidman tossed a career-high six innings and allowed just one hit with a career-high five strikeouts and three walks. This was the first time the freshman has pitched more than two innings in a game for the Bison.
Maxwell earned his ninth save of the season to rank among the national leaders. The senior is 9-for-9 in save opportunities and is now tied for second in program history with Jason Buursma for single-season saves. His 12 career saves are tied for fourth with former Major League Baseball player Eric Junge ('99).
Michael Trommer hit his ninth home run of the season and his second of the series. Michael Chiaravallo hit his second homer of the year, a two-run shot that went down as the game's winnings runs.
The Bison had nine hits in the ballgame including two-hit performances by Chiaravallo and Lleyton Coupe. Garrett Mathias extended his on-base streak to 37 games with an RBI double. He has reached base safely in every game of his young career.
Originally a 1:05 p.m. start time, the game was delayed twice until 4 p.m. due to rain. Despite the delay, the Bison looked sharp from the start. After a leadoff walk to Army slugger Josiah Overbeerk, Chiaravallo threw out a runner at home from right field to end the first inning.
After saving the run in the first, Chiaravallo came up in the second and crushed a two-run home run to left field to give Bucknell a 2-0 advantage. Trommer followed with another two-run homer in the next inning to make it 4-0.
Zach Selfon extended the lead with a well-executed squeeze bunt to bring home a fifth run in the sixth. Seidman finished his day with a 1-2-3 bottom of the sixth as the lefthander retired the final eight batters he faced in the game.
The Bison tacked on more runs in the seventh and eight innings. Mathias roped a two-out line drive to give the Bison a 6-0 lead with his team-leading 34th RBI. Another run came home on Deacon Bowne's squeeze bunt in the eighth, and Billy Fluharty drove in a run on a fielder's choice.
Maxwell surrendered just a walk in his three-inning save to lower his ERA to 1.40. He has a 0.75 ERA in conference play with five saves.
Bucknell ends a six-game road stretch with a single game at Penn State on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Bucknell then hosts Navy for a three-game series beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday at 12 p.m. at Depew Field at Marren Park. Bucknell will welcome back alumni from the 1996 and 2001 Patriot League Championship teams on Saturday, then celebrate Senior Day on Sunday.
