Avery Powers' 13 Strikeouts Fuel Coach Stackhouse's First Bison Win in 7-3 Victory over St. Bonaventure

"It was a great team win," Stackhouse, who returned to Lewisburg to coach her alma mater after a successful career at Penn Tech. "It feels good to see growth throughout the weekend and end on a high note! 'ray!!!"
Powers went the distance, and minus a brief hiccup in the fifth inning, held the St. Bonaventure players spellbound with her dazzling accuracy and guile. The freshman pitcher earned her first collegiate win and not a single walk marred her stat line.
"Avery pitched an absolute gem," said Stackhouse. "13 Ks was phenomenal. She had great spin, her off-speed was on point, and she had pin-point location all game."
Her 13 ring-them-up and set-them downs were the most by a Bison hurler since strikeout queen Raeanne Geffert tossed 16 against Mount St. Mary's on Feb. 15, 2020.Â
"It is great to see the future of Bucknell softball controlling the game with strikeouts this early in the season," said Geffert.Â
Madison Roukey, the only Bison pitcher since Geffert to hit double-digit strikeouts in a single game, raved about the newcomer's debut.Â
"It is so exciting to see a young pitcher come out and perform like that in the opening weekend. She brings great composed energy and command in the circle, and she's only going to keep getting better and better! I can't wait to watch her and the ladies compete this year. They are so fun to watch and I know they are going to do big things this season!"
Bucknell's hitting started strong with two runs in the opening frame, providing a comfortable cushion for the rookie pitcher. Haley Speicher hit an infield single and then stole second. Stackhouse prioritized using Speicher's speed more in 2026 and the senior already has two stolen bases after only swiping four in 2025. Barbara Jo Coppola's grounder advanced Speicher to third base. Texas native Skye Perez, who clearly enjoyed returning to the Lone State State by recording a .462 average for the weekend, smashed an RBI double to right center. After Meadow Gambacurta struck out swinging, Perez moved to third on a wild pitch. Brooke Popella plated the Texan with a sharp single.Â

Powers began to heat up in the surprisingly cool Texan morning by striking out the side in the second and third innings.Â
The Bison restarted the offense in the fourth inning. Gambacurta led off with a single. Nicole Lioumis pinch ran for the first baseman and advanced to third when the right field caught Popella's foul ball. Lawson cracked her first deep double to score Lioumis. Shea Malone walked on four pitches. Angela Seropian reached on a fielder's choice at the cost of Malone. The senior class stepped up. Rapino rapped a single, scoring Lawson. Haley Speicher followed with an RBI double, building a 5-0 lead.Â
The insurance runs were needed. St. Bonaventure struck for two runs the next frame. Colsten Beers led off with a triple and Lauren Dundon smashed a two-run homer. Powers rallied and limited the damage. Two strikeouts and a fly out followed.Â
Bucknell matched the runs in its next at-bats with two-out lightning. Gambacurta singled up the middle and advanced to second on Popella's grounder. Lawson hit her second RBI double and Shea Malone scored Lawson with an RBI single. Natalie Monroe pinch hit for Angelina Seropian and began her collegiate career with a double that narrowly missed clearing the fences.Â

Powers continued to breeze through the Bonnies' lineup until minor damage arose in the seventh inning. Beers led off with a single and advanced and scored on wild pitches and a Seropian throwing error. The lapse did not unnerve the Bison rookie. She induced two pop ups and obtained a swinging strikeout to end the game and clinch her and Stackhouse's first of many wins at Bucknell.Â
