LEWISBURG, Pa. -- Bucknell visits Army West Point on Wednesday in a special Education Day 11 a.m. start at Christl Arena. Note that local radio coverage for this game will move to WKOK 1070 AM, with live video streaming on ESPN+.
This is Bucknell's first trip to West Point since last year's wild 116-110 double-overtime thriller won by the Black Knights, and Army also defeated the Bison in OT earlier this year on a 3-pointer at the buzzer by Jackson Furman. Bucknell and Army are two of the three teams tied for eighth place entering the penultimate round of Patriot League play on Wednesday. Lafayette is alone in seventh place at 6-10, one game behind Loyola at 7-9. The bottom four seeds will play a first-round game in the Patriot League Tournament next Tuesday, with the 7 and 8 seeds hosting those games, so there is plenty at stake in the final two regular-season games.
Beyond the seeding implications, the Bison are simply looking to find some positive momentum going into the postseason. With a roster thinned out by a rash of injuries, Bucknell has dropped five straight and nine of its last 11. One of those losses was the overtime setback to Army at Sojka Pavilion on Jan. 21, which started a run of five straight games decided in the final seconds. Senior Achile Spadone and freshmen Amon Dörries and Pat Curtin have carried most of the scoring load in recent weeks. Those three combined for 56 of the team's 63 points in Sunday's loss to Holy Cross, and in Patriot League play, the trio has accounted for 65.0% of the team's points.
Dörries tallied 20 points and a season-high nine rebounds against the Crusaders, giving him eight 20-point games on the season. He earned his fifth Patriot League Rookie of the Week award on Monday. Bucknell had not had a Rookie of the Week since 2020-21, but the Bison have now earned the award six times this season. Curtin was honored on Jan. 12 along with Dörries' five citations. Kevin Bettencourt holds the Bucknell record and a share of the Patriot League record with nine Rookie of the Week nods in 2002-03.
Over his last 11 games, Spadone is averaging 16.5 points and 7.8 rebounds per game. The Bison have been very thin in the frontcourt without injured regulars Ruot Bijiek and Grgur Brcic, so Spadone has often been playing the 4 spot at 6'4", and he has now pulled down five or more rebounds in 13 straight games, including 11 at American and 10 against Lafayette and Holy Cross. Spadone is averaging 7.3 rpg in Patriot League play to rank T-3rd in the league.
Army has dropped five of its last six, including an 81-63 setback to arch-rival Navy at home on Saturday. The Black Knights have several potent scorers and average 72.6 points per game, but they allow the most points in the league (77.5). Army's 310 made 3-pointers and 929 attempted threes are by far the most in the league, and they take the eighth-most threes in the nation. Of their 1,767 shot attempts this season, 52.6% have come from beyond the arc. The Black Knights also lead the league in offensive rebounds per game at 11.8. Army has received balanced scoring this year, with Ryan Curry leading the way at 13.8 ppg. Jaxson Bell (11.8) and Jacen Holloway (10.6) also score in double figures, followed by Furman (9.6), Jorn Everson (8.1), and Kevin McCarthy (7.3).
The Bison hold a 64-26 lead in a series that dates back to 1929. Army won the first 10 series showdowns, nine of them coming prior to 1966. As Patriot League rivals, Bucknell has won 63 of 79 meetings. In Patriot League Tournament action, Bucknell is 8-2 against Army. Eight of those 10 postseason meetings have come in the quarterfinals.
Bucknell and Army split the season series last year, with the home team winning both times. Army claimed a wild 116-110 double overtime win at West Point, and then the Bison returned the favor with an 84-53 rout at Sojka Pavilion. Last year's game at Christl Arena was one the wildest in team history. The 116-110 double-overtime loss was the highest-scoring game in school history, eclipsing the 225 points from a 119-106 win over Colgate in 1968. There was high drama throughout the afternoon. Bucknell trailed 87-74 with 3:17 remaining in regulation before stunning the Black Knights with a 13-0 run to force overtime. Noah Williamson scored the tying basket with 16 seconds left, and then he did it again with 26 seconds to go in the first OT period. The Bison led 105-102 in the second OT session, but Army took control with an 8-0 run. The 116 points were the most ever scored by the Black Knights, and it was the most points allowed by Bucknell since a 117-93 loss to Lafayette in 1955. Williamson finished with 29 points and Josh Bascoe had 25 to lead the Bison. Achile Spadone also had a strong game with 17 points, eight rebounds, and six assists. Ryan Curry paced Army with 30 points, followed by Jalen Rucker with 25 and Josh Scovens with 23.
On Senior Day at Sojka Pavilion, Bascoe had the best game of his career with 30 points, and the Bison rolled despite playing without Williamson due to injury. Ruot Bijiek added 13 points and Bucknell shot 56.9% from the field and 14-for-25 from 3-point range. Rucker and AJ Allenspach led Army with 13 points apiece, and the Bison did a much better job on Curry, holding him to two points on 1-for-5 shooting.
The Bison and Black Knights needed overtime once again to settle this year's first matchup at Sojka Pavilion on Jan. 21. Jackson Furman hit a transition 3-pointer with less than a second remaining to lift the Black Knights to an 87-84 OT win. Pat Curtin matched his career high with 25 points to lead all scorers. Spadone tallied 18 points and nine rebounds, Jayden Williams scored a career-high 17 points, and Amon Dörries also reached double figures with 13 for the Bison. Jaxson Bell scored a team-high 18 for Army, including two tying free throws with 2.8 left in regulation to force overtime.
Bucknell wraps up the regular season on Saturday at Lehigh at 2 p.m. The Bison defeated the Mountain Hawks 72-65 on Jan. 3.
