LEWISBURG, Pa. – Holy Cross broke open a tie game with a 10-0 run in the final five minutes to turn back Bucknell 72-63 on Sunday at Sojka Pavilion. Achile Spadone recorded 20 points and 10 rebounds, and Amon Dörries had 20 points and nine boards, but the Bison dropped their fifth game in a row to fall to 5-11 in Patriot League play.
Gabe Warren led the Crusaders with 21 points, and Tyler Boston scored five of his 19 in that decisive late-game surge. After going 2-for-9 from the 3-point arc in the first half, Holy Cross hit 7 of 10 in the second stanza. Meanwhile, Bucknell's long-range struggles continued, as the Bison went 4-for-21 on the day.
Down 56-51 with 6:07 remaining in a game that was filled with major momentum shifts, Spadone scored twice in transition, the latter a 3-pointer after Jayden Williams ripped the ball away from Boston on the defensive end. The trey tied the game at 56 with 4:51 to go, but the Bison went scoreless for the next 3:09 while the Crusaders rattled off 10 straight points.
Boston got it going with a tiebreaking 3-pointer. After the under-4 media timeout, Aidan Disu made both ends of a 1-and-1 after getting fouled on an offensive rebound. Boston hit a pull-up jumper, and then Disu, who was coming off four straight 20-point games, buried a 3-pointer for his first field goal of the night and a 66-56 lead with 2:02 to go.
Pat Curtin, who had 16 points and six rebounds in the game, canned a 3-pointer to end Bucknell's drought. The Bison got a defensive stop but couldn't get two shots to go at the other end, and Disu leaked out for a breakaway dunk to seal it with 42 seconds left.
There were 13 lead changes and 11 ties in the contest. Holy Cross made the first push with a 14-4 run to go up 17-10 after eight minutes, but the Bison responded with a 17-4 spurt, with Dörries accounting for nine of those points. Down 27-21, Holy Cross strung together 10 points in a row to grab the lead back, and the visitors took a slim 31-30 edge to the locker room.
The game was tied on five different occasions in the first six minutes of the second half, and a Curtin 3-pointer followed by a Dörries layup gave the Bison a 42-40 lead with 13:25 to go. Dörries was whistled for his fourth foul with 11:44 to go, and Holy Cross immediately responded with back-to-back 3-pointers from Boston and Aidan Richard, followed by a Warren layup to go back in front 48-42.
Spadone's 3-point play started a 7-0 Bison run, with Aleksander Pachucki's short jumper in the lane giving them a 49-48 lead with 7:54 left. John St. Germain and Boston hit treys from opposite corners to start an 8-2 Holy Cross spurt, but the Bison were able to tie it once more on the Spadone transition buckets.
Spadone played all 40 minutes for the second time in the last three games, and he recorded his second career double-double, this one coming on his Senior Day. Spadone, Quin Berger, Ruot Bijiek, Josh Fulton, and Brady Muller were all honored before Bucknell's final regular-season home game.
Bucknell shot 37.1 percent overall and hit 13 of 15 from the foul line. Holy Cross finished at 47.1 percent after shooting 53.8 percent in the second half. The Crusaders were also good from the foul line, hitting 15 of 18. Bucknell amassed a 35-29 rebounding edge, including 13 offensive boards.
With two games remaining in the regular season, Bucknell is in a three-way tie for eighth place in the Patriot League standings, sitting alongside Holy Cross and Army. The Bison will next face the Black Knights on Wednesday morning at 11 a.m. at West Point.
