ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Bucknell men's swimming and diving squad had 10 individual point-scorers and established five new top-10 teams in the team record book during the first full night of finals at the Patriot League Championships on Thursday at Lejeune Hall. The Bison remain in fifth place out of 10 teams with two more full days to come.
Navy, which saw its run of 20 consecutive Patriot League championships ended by Army last year, is out to a huge lead after four more events were contested on Thursday night. Boosted by a 1-2-3-4-5 finish in the 500-yard freestyle, the Midshipmen have 619 points to second-place Army's 428. Loyola is in third with 347, followed by Boston University (343), Bucknell (297), Lehigh (214), Holy Cross (202), Lafayette (178), Colgate (150), and American (134).
Freshman Drew Davis enjoyed a productive day, setting a pair of top-10 marks. He was the lone Bison to make an A Final on Thursday, finishing eighth in the 200 individual medley in 1:49.34. He went slightly faster in the morning prelims, and that mark of 1:48.34 slides him into the No. 10 spot in team history. Shane Wynne actually posted Bucknell's fastest 200 IM of the day with a 1:48.22 in the B Final, where he was just out-touched by Loyola's Luke Dwyer by .05 seconds. That was a new personal best for Wynne, who remains in ninth on Bucknell's all-time list.
Dante Buonadonna (16th) and Jason Kellerman (18th) also scored in the 200 IM, giving Bucknell 57 points in that event.
Davis later led off with the backstroke leg of the 400 medley relay, which finished sixth in 3:16.56. Davis, James Lombardi, Finn Russell, and Colin Smith recorded the sixth-fastest time in school history, and Davis' 49.14 split moved him up from sixth to fifth all-time in the 100 back.
Earlier in the day, William Shoemaker went 4:28.92 in the 500 free prelims, good for the No. 8 position in team history. That qualified him for the B Final, where he finished 15th. Riley Twiss and Finn Franks placed 21st and 22nd, respectively.
In the 50 free, Smith (15th, 20.47) and Russell (16th, 20.48) finished just one-hundredth of a second apart in the B Final. Drew Greene placed 22nd in 20.73.
Points will be awarded in seven more events on a busy Friday in Annapolis. Prelims start at 10 a.m. followed by the finals at 6 p.m., with live coverage on ESPN+.
