LEWISBURG, Pa. – A pair of promising freshmen led their respective teams to big performances over the weekend, and on Monday they were announced as Bison of the Week for their efforts. Marion Haskell, a first-year opposite on the volleyball team, helped lead Bucknell to impressive home wins over Army and Colgate, while classmate Brad McDermott turned in the best performance of his young career to help the men's golf team to the championship at the Matthews Auto Collegiate Invitational.
Bucknell volleyball played its first home matches of 2026 and drew strength from familiar ground, delivering two wins against Patriot League rivals Army and Colgate. Haskell played a leading role in the Bison's 2-0 weekend, pacing the Orange & Blue in kills (32) and hitting percentage (.391).
Haskell started the weekend against Army, posting 14 kills on a sparkling .407 hitting percentage. Defensively, she contributed two total blocks and diverted Army attacks all match with her height.
She increased her assistance in the five-set thriller over Colgate. The Birmingham, Ala., native slammed home 18 kills on a solid .378 hitting percentage. The rookie also added a block and two digs.
Haskell has posted six double-digit kill totals, and her 132 kills rank second on the team. Bucknell volleyball remains at Davis Gym this weekend to face American (Oct. 10) and Holy Cross (Oct. 11).
Meanwhile, McDermott posted his first career top-five finish at Binghamton's annual fall tournament, as the Bison picked up their first team win since 2021. McDermott came into the week with a 77.7 average over his first six rounds of the season, but he far exceeded that figure at the Links at Hiawatha Landing. The Wayne, Pa., native opened with a 2-under-par 70 – his first career under-par round – and followed it up with a solid 75 in chilly, windy conditions in Monday's final round.
McDermott finished in fifth place in a field of 87 players with a 36-hole total of 145 (+1). He was one of three Bison to finish in the top 10, joining fellow freshman Charlie Barrickman (3rd) and senior Taylor Kuehn (T-9th).
The Bison men's golf squad will be back in action this coming weekend at the Bucknell Invitational. The three-day, 54-hole tournament runs from Sunday through Tuesday at the Bucknell Golf Club.
