LEWISBURG, Pa. – Sabrina Rogers snuck a redirect just inches over the goal line with 90 seconds left in the first half and Army West Point tacked on three more in the second half on the way to a 4-0 win over Bucknell in Patriot League women's soccer action on Saturday at Emmitt Field at Holmes Stadium.
First-place Army remained unbeaten and unscored-upon in Patriot League play at 6-0-1, while the Bison fell to 3-2-2. Bucknell dropped into a tie for fourth place in the league table with two games remaining in the regular season.
It was a fairly even match for the first 40 minutes, with both defenses keeping the ball out of harm's way. Ingrid Murphy cracked a shot from the left edge of the area that required a save from Karalyn Dail, and at the other end the Bison had to defend three early corner kicks and a handful of free kicks into the area.
Army finally found the breakthrough in the 44th minute. A Bison defender went to the ground on the right flank, which gave Megan Youngberg space to send in a low cross to the near post. Rogers and Bison goalkeeper Sarah McFarland arrived at the ball at the same time, and Rogers got just enough of a touch on it to roll it across the line before it was swept away.
The Black Knights had the upper hand right from the start in the second half, and with exactly 25 minutes remaining a foul in the box led to a Maddi Woodward penalty kick. Bella Conti turned the corner on the end line and snuck a shot by McFarland from a sharp angle in the 76th minute, and Lily Marquez capped it off in the 82nd when she touched the ball over the line after McFarland got a hand on Rogers' shot from the left flank.
Army outshot the Bison 14-7 and led 7-2 in corner kicks. Bucknell had not conceded a goal in the run of play in more than 700 minutes – opponents' only three goals over the previous seven games had been on penalty kicks – before Rogers ended that streak late in the first half.
Bucknell returns home next Saturday to face Colgate at 2 p.m. It will be Senior Day at Emmitt Field, and captains Julia Palitti and Dylan Zednik along with Riley Hayes, Ashley Kozlowski, Lily Moraller, Caitlyn Scott, and Carleigh Robertson will be recognized before the game.
