Women’s Soccer Clipped at Navy 1-0 on Late PK

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Chiara Cosenza's penalty kick in the 83rd minute lifted Navy to a 1-0 win over Bucknell on Friday night in wet and windy conditions at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility. It was the first loss in Patriot League play for Bucknell (3-1-2), while Navy (4-1-1) jumped ahead of the Bison in the standings and at least temporarily moved into a first-place tie with Army (4-0-1).
The match was moved up an hour to try to get ahead of storms moving into the area, and after an evenly played first half, heavy wind and rain blew through along the banks of the Severn River. Bucknell had to play into the severe wind in the second half and kept the game deadlocked until an untimely challenge in the box resulted in the penalty with 7:48 remaining.
Sarah McFarland was outstanding in goal with six saves, including a highlight-reel, full-extension diving stop on Ande Swan in the 54th minute. McFarland handled the ball well in the wet conditions, but the Bison were often pinned back trying to play into the wind.
Dani Howard had one of Bucknell's best scoring chances just before the goal. Her low shot was secured on the ground by Navy keeper Natasha Stamrood, with Ingrid Murphy right there to pounce on a rebound had it been spilled. Stamrood's long punt was grazed backwards off the head of a Bison defender, and Jessica Black chased it down on the end line. Black got past another defender and slotted a pass centrally to Cosenza, who was taken down on a slide tackle from behind.
Cosenza put her spot kick just past McFarland's finger tips inside the right post.
Navy finished with an 18-8 shot advantage, including an 11-3 edge in the second half. Louisa Thomsen led the Bison with two shots, including a good look in space in the first half that was blocked out for a corner kick by a late-charging defender.
"I thought we fought through some adversity with the travel day and the weather and played really hard," said head coach Kelly Cook. "It was a good, physical battle. Sarah McFarland made some outstanding saves in tough conditions, and at the other end we had a few good chances but still need to be better in the attacking third."
Bucknell was once again bitten from the penalty spot. The Bison have allowed only three goals in its last seven games, including all six Patriot League contests, and all three have come on PKs.
Bucknell will now be off until next Saturday, Oct. 24, when first-place Army visits Emmitt Field for a 1 p.m. start.
