BOSTON, Mass. – Gaby Parker recorded her first career two-goal game to lift the Bucknell women's soccer team to a big road win, 2-1 at Boston University on Saturday afternoon at Nickerson Field. Parker's 61st-minute goal snapped a 1-1 tie, and the Bison locked it down defensively from there to remain unbeaten in Patriot League play.
Bucknell is now 6-5-3 overall and 3-0-2 in the Patriot League, and the Bison jumped from fourth in the table to second after the fifth round of conference play. Army has the lead with 13 points from a 4-0-1 record, followed by Bucknell alone in second on 11 points. Third-place Navy (3-1-1) has 10 points, and the Bison and Mids will square off next Friday in Annapolis.
Boston University (2-3, 6 points), the reigning Patriot League regular-season champion, suffered its third straight loss and dropped to seventh in the standings.
While Bucknell's defensive resurgence has led to a 3-0-3 stretch over the last six games, Parker was the story of the day for the Bison. The sophomore entered the weekend leading the Patriot League in shot attempts but had been snakebit on the finishing end with just one goal. She found her breakout moment in Boston, scoring with deft touches in the ninth and 61st minutes.
Bucknell took the early lead from a long punt by goalkeeper Sarah McFarland well into the Terriers' half. Presley Sutter's flicked header sent Parker in, and the striker got past charging goalkeeper Bridget Carr and poked the ball into the gaping net. McFarland earned her first career assist on the play.
Boston University drew level from the penalty spot in the 39th minute. After Samantha Ryan was tripped in the box, Samantha Aronson hit the back of the net from the spot for her second goal of the season.
Just past the hour mark, Thomsen took the ball off the foot of a Terrier near midfield and found Sutter in space on the counter. Sutter made a nifty one-touch pass to Parker, who pulled the ball away from a defender slotted a left-footed shot past substitute goalkeeper Jill Humphreys.
The Bison have allowed only two goals in this six-game unbeaten streak, and both have been on penalty kicks. The defense has now gone 587:25 – nearly 10 hours of game action – without giving up a goal in the run of play.
McFarland made six saves, five coming in the first half. The Terriers had 62 percent of the possession and outshot the Bison 14-6, but most of the attempts came from outside the box.
"I thought the whole defensive united stepped up huge today," said head coach Kelly Cook. "Sarah made some big saves, but the overall team defense was fantastic. We had to defend quite a bit, which is what Boston wants to do, but we did a great job limiting the quality of their chances. Offensively, we have been creating chances, and the difference today as that we put two of them away. I'm so happy for Gaby, who has been working so hard but just hasn't been rewarded. Those were two great goals, which helped us start a really challenging stretch on the right foot."
The Bison have the two service academies up next, starting with Navy on Friday night in Annapolis.
