
Women's Basketball Falls to Army West Point 64-44 at Christl Arena

WEST POINT, N.Y. — Bucknell women's basketball (5-13, 1-6 PL) fell to Army West Point (15-3, 6-1 PL) 64-44 on Wednesday evening at Christl Arena. After a competitive first quarter of play that ended with the Bison down by just three, the Black Knights outscored Bucknell 23-5 in the second quarter to gain a 21-point halftime lead that the Bison would be unable to come back from, despite out-scoring Army 12-6 in the final ten minutes.
Tuana Coskun led the Bison in scoring with 16 points. Hope Masonius also put up double-digit points with 10. Isabella Casey led the team in rebounds with five and Elena Houghton put up three blocks on the evening, leading the team.
Bucknell out-shot Army from the field, thanks to a fourth quarter push. The Bison shot 20-of-45 while the Black Knights shot 23-of-52, just 0.2 percent less than Bucknell. Arm yout-shot the Bison from three and from the free-throw line. From three the Black Knights went 5-of-18 to Bucknell's 1-of-11 and from the line, Army shot 13-of-14 while the Bison shot 3-of-5.
The Black Knights out-rebounded the Bison 33-21 and recorded 16 assists to the Bucknell's seven. Turnovers were close as Bucknell had 18 and Army finished with 15 on the night.
Bucknell had more blocks than Army with five to the Black Knights three, thanks to the three Houghton blocks. The Bison also recorded more steals than Army with 13 to their nine, however Bucknell was less able to score points off of those steals with only 13 points off of turnovers compared to Army's 23.
The game opened with two minutes of scoreless action as the teams had five combined turnovers. Army notched three and Bucknell had two. The Black Knights opened scoring with a layup from Brooke Wilson. Anna Kunzwiler was fouled while shooting and made one of her free-throws and then after the Bison forced a turnover, Tuana Coskun hit a jumper to give the Bison the lead. Army then hit back-to-back shots including a three pointer from Reese Ericson to give it a 7-2 lead. Isabella Casey was then fouled under the basket and went one-for-two from the free-throw line, which Ericson answered with a jumper to give the Black Knights a 9-3 lead at the media timeout with 4:55 left in the first. Out of the break, Coskun hit a shot to close the gap to three, but Army hit a layup, forced a turnover and banked in two free-throws off of a foul to take a 13-5 lead. Zemitis and Mariah Hardy answered with back-to-back baskets to make it a three point game. Army responded by making both free-throws off of a foul, but Zemitis ended the quarter with a bucket of her own to close the gap back to three at the end of the first quarter.
B. Wilson opened the second quarter with four straight points for the Black Knights, but Coskun responded with a three-pointer for the Bison. Army then went on a 17-0 run to take a 36-15 lead with two minutes remaining in the first half. Masonius broke the Black Knights' scoring streak with a layup, but Army hit a shot with a couple seconds left to extend its lead to 38-17 at halftime.
Army opened the third quarter with back-to-back buckets after the Bison turned over the ball to extend its lead. Coskun then made a tough layup, but Smith answered for the Black Knights with one of her own. Coskun drove to the basket and hit her shot while being fouled. She then made the free-throw and after a missed opportunity by Army, Isabella Casey drove to the basket and closed the gap to 20. The Black Knights then went on a 9-0 run to take a 53-24 lead at the media timeout with 3:47 remaining. Out of the break, Mariah Hardy broke the Black Knights run with a quick layup. On a second chance shot, Montrose drained a three for Army, which was answered by a second chance bucket by Masonius. After a missed shot by the Black Knights, Masonius put up a second layup in a row to cut the Bison's deficit to 26. Army hit two more free-throws, but the Bison had the final shot of the third quarter which was another Masonius layup.
Casey opened the final ten minutes of play with a layup, but Army answered with back-to-back buckets. Bucknell then went on an 8-0 run with two layups from Coskun and two from Casey off of two turnovers, forcing the Black Knights to call a timeout. Out of the break, Army notched a bucket, before over two minutes of play went scoreless. Masonius broke the scoring drought with a layup to close Bucknell's gap back to 20.
Bucknell will head back home for another Patriot League contest in Sojka Pavilion on Saturday, Jan. 24. The Bison will be facing Loyola (Md.) for the second time this season with tipoff set for 2 p.m.
