LEWISBURG, Pa. – Sophomore forward Katie Connell earned her first career Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week award on Monday, less than 24 hours after she scored a sensational game-tying goal in the 70th minute of Bucknell's 1-1 draw at Pittsburgh.
It was a very good week for the Bison, who went 1-0-1 on two road trips to Western Pennsylvania. They routed Saint Francis 4-1 on Thursday, and then bounced back from an early goal to earn the hard-fought tie against a strong ACC opponent in Pittsburgh. Connell played a major role in both matches.
Down 1-0 with only 20 minutes to go at Pitt, Connell ran on to a long ball played over the top by Henna Andican. Connell faced up her mark outside the right edge of the box, shook off a second defender, and fired a shot from a sharp angle over the goalkeeper into the far side netting.
In the Saint Francis game, Bucknell was dominating the match but didn't have a goal to show for it until Connell weaved through four defenders and broke the ice with 40 seconds left in the first half. Connell assisted on freshman Gaby Parker's first collegiate goal just after the halftime break, and then Andican added two more in quick succession to make it 4-0.
Connell now has three goals and two assists on the season, and her eight points are tied for fifth-most in the Patriot League. She tallied five goals and three assists as a freshman in 2024 en route to Third Team All-Patriot League honors.
The Bison are now 2-4-1 on the season, and their tough non-conference schedule continues this week with home games against No. 16 Georgetown and Towson. The Hoyas are coming off a 1-0 win over No. 10 South Carolina and will bring a 3-1-2 record to Emmitt Field on Thursday evening. Georgetown has made 13 straight NCAA Tournament appearances, including Final Four runs in 2016 and 2018.
