CHAPEL HILL, N.C.- North Carolina (3-0) ranks first among others receiving votes in the top 25 poll, and the Tar Heels demonstrated why in their defeat of the Bison on Friday night. Bucknell (0-4) took a set from the ACC power but fell 11-25, 25-15, 20-25, and 15-25 in four sets. The game served as a homecoming for three Bison players, Bri Frazilus, Cameron Lloyd, and Riley Tucker. All three players hail from North Carolina.Â
North Carolina nearly doubled Bucknell in kills (67-36) and collected 50 digs to the Bison's 34. Bucknell doubled up UNC in service aces 2-1.Â
Frazilus and Kostic led Bucknell in kills with nine. Sidney Shaffer added eight kills and blocked four UNCÂ attacks.Â
UNC's Safi Hampton performed to her press clippings with 16 kills and a .323 hitting percentage. Two other Tar Heels, Hailey Pearce and Chelsea Thorpe, each collected 11 kills.
Bucknell tied the first set at 3-3 before North Carolina asserted itself with a 16-2 run. The Tar Heels coasted the rest of the set to the 25-11 win.Â
The Bison fought back and shocked the Carmichael Arena into stunned silence with a dominating 25-15 set two victory. Bucknell stormed to a 11-4 lead. UNC inched to a 12-7 deficit. The Orange & Blue slammed the door going ahead 22-12. North Carolina natives Frazilus and Tucker teamed up for the set winning block.Â
The Tar Heels grabbed the pivotal third set, 25-20, by gaining the early advantage and despite several Bison rally attempts, never allowed Bucknell to overcome the lead. Bucknell surged and made it 24-20 but a Pearce kill won the set.Â
The score sat at 6-6 in the final set and then the Tar Heels ripped off a 11-2 run for the decisive lead and to essentially end the game. The Bison kept grinding but UNC converted a final kill to win the set and game.Â
