REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. – The Bucknell women's golf team enjoyed winning so much last week that they're trying to do it again. With Joelle Johnson, Sophia Bardunias, and Katherine Vice all positioned in the top 10, the Bison sprinted to the top of the 15-team field after a long 36-hole day on Monday at the Battle at the Creek at Kings Creek GC.
Bucknell carded rounds of 297 and 295, with the 592 total marking the best 36-hole start on a par-71 course in team history. The Bison sat in third place after the first round, but then they were the only team in the field to break 300 in the afternoon. They will start Tuesday's final round with a one-shot lead over Columbia (291-302), with third-place Lehigh (293-313) 14 strokes behind.
The Bison are coming off a runaway win at the Bucknell Invitational in last week's season opener, and Vice clipped teammate Johnson in a playoff for medalist honors. Johnson paced the team on Monday with rounds of 73-71, and her 2-over 144 total positions her in a tie for second place, just two shots behind leader Jessie Burch (72-70) of tournament host Sacred Heart. Columbia's Kristina Xu posted a pair of 72s and is also 2-over.
Johnson carded three birdies to cancel out three bogeys on the way to her even-par 71 in the afternoon. Bardunias shot a 1-under 35 on the back nine in her second round, and at 5-over (75-72) she is alone in seventh place. Vice (74-76) is tied for 10th place at 8-over 150.
Lila Smith posted counting scores in both rounds with 75-76, and Katrina von Behren tallied 77-81. Nine of Bucknell's 10 scores on Tuesday were 77 or better.
The Bison have never won two consecutive tournaments since the program's inception in 1998, and now they will try to finish the feat when the final round gets underway on Tuesday morning.
