Late PK Lifts No. 16 Georgetown to 1-0 Win over Bison Women’s Soccer

LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell women's soccer team went toe-to-toe in a physical battle with No. 16 Georgetown on Thursday night at Emmitt Field at Holmes Stadium, but the Hoyas pulled out a 1-0 victory on Shay Montgomery's penalty kick with three minutes left in the match.
Coming off a 1-1 draw at Pittsburgh on Sunday, Bucknell had the more dangerous offensive chances in the first half, and then the Bison back line held strong against waves of pressure in the late stages of the contest, with some help from a couple of highlight-reel saves from Reese Dolan. They couldn't quite get a second straight result against a major conference team, however. Georgetown captain Natalie Means, who was a menace on the flanks throughout the second half, charged into the box and drew a penalty, and Montgomery converted from the spot.
Henna Andican, who attempted four of Bucknell's nine shots, nearly tied it right back up only seconds after the restart, but her shot just missed the top right corner.
Andican nearly made it 1-0 in the second minute of the match, but her running header from close range off a beautiful service from Ava Palladino went over the bar. Three minutes later, freshman striker Gaby Parker just missed the post on a shot that was deflected out for a corner kick, and then Andican's back-post volley on the corner skipped just wide.
Georgetown's first good chance came in the 11th minute, when top scorer Maja Lardner cut back to the top of the D and fired over the bar.
Andican forced Cara Martin into a tough save in the 15th minute, as the Georgetown keeper had to scramble to the near post to parry away a shot from a sharp angle. Six minutes later, Parker played a sweet through ball to Andican, who eventually passed back to Parker for a shot from the top of the 18 that clipped over the bar.
Dolan's first ten-bell save came with three minutes left in the first half, when she dove to her right to palm aside Montgomery's low shot through traffic.
Six minutes into the second half, freshman Dani Howard played her classmate Parker in behind, but Martin made a good kick save. Riley Hayes' follow-up attempt was blocked.
The Hoyas saw most of the ball in the last 35 minutes of the game. Dolan laid out for a tremendous save on Henley Tippins and then covered the near post to turn aside a hard shot from Lardner.
The Bison were scrambling a bit in their own box late in the game, and Georgetown's appeals for a penalty were finally answered with three minutes to go.
The Hoyas, who were coming off a 1-0 win over No. 10 South Carolina on Sunday, improved to 4-1-2 on the season. They also have a win over No. 15 Virginia Tech and a draw against No. 13 Virginia.
Georgetown finished with a 15-9 shot advantage and a 9-1 edge in corner kicks. Dolan tallied five saves, while Martin recorded two.
The game was similar to the most recent meeting between the two teams, when the then-20th-ranked Hoyas defeated the Bison 1-0 on a goal in the 86th minute.
The Bison are now 2-5-1 against a strong schedule, and they will face another tough test against a rested Towson team on Sunday at Emmitt Field.
