Women’s Soccer Draws Towson 1-1, Now Turns Focus to Patriot League Play

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Henna Andican's fifth goal of the season was matched by Sophie Thibeault's late equalizer, and Bucknell and Towson played to a 1-1 draw on Sunday afternoon at sunny Emmitt Field at Holmes Stadium. The Bison now turn their attention to Patriot League play, with the first round coming up next Saturday at Lehigh.
The wide-open match featured 38 total shots, 22 coming from the Tigers, who were on a full week's rest while the Bison were coming off a hard-fought 1-0 loss to No. 16 Georgetown on Thursday.
Towson was on the front foot early, but Bucknell settled in and had the better of play throughout the bulk of the opening 45. Riley Hayes had a hard shot from distance tipped over the bar by goalkeeper Teagan Gardner, and moments later Hayes' free kick from the edge of the area sailed over.
Leah Bolson saw her shot from the right side of the box skip just wide in the 40th minute, after a long free kick fell in behind the defense.
Bucknell's goal came on a set piece just 1:45 into the second half. Julia Palitti served a ball deep into the box, Gaby Parker flicked a header towards goal, and Andican touched it in for her team-leading fifth tally of the season.

Reese Dolan made six of her seven saves in the second half, as Towson pushed for the tying goal. Dolan made a terrific stop on Brooke Birrell after a well-worked corner kick sequence. Gardner answered five minutes later with another tip-over on Hayes' free kick.
The Bison did well to withstand the pressure for about a half-hour, but Towson finally found the equalizer in the 83rd minute. After a throw-in down the line to the left corner flag, Malin Bernt Schops won the 50-50 ball, broke down the end line, and centered a pass to Thibeault for the first-touch shot in the center of the area. Thibeault one-timed it home for her third goal of the season.
Bucknell almost got caught forward on their own corner kick with five minutes to play. Towson cleared, and then Emma Kirkpatrick had a clean breakaway all the way from midfield. As two Bison pursued from behind, Kirkpatrick pulled her shot wide of the right post.
Again the Tigers nearly won it late when Kale'a Perry's curling shot from the left side skimmed the top of the crossbar with only 10 seconds remaining.
Bucknell will be on the road for its first two Patriot League matches, starting next Saturday at Lehigh at 2 p.m.
