Gavin’s First Career Goal Sends Women’s Soccer to 2-1 Win over FDU

POSTGAME WITH COACH KELLY COOK AND EMMA GAVIN:
LEWISBURG, Pa. – Senior Henna Andican scored in the opening minute of the match and freshman Emma Gavin's first collegiate goal broke a 1-1 tie in the 62nd minute, sending the Bucknell women's soccer team to a 2-1 win over FDU on Sunday afternoon at Emmitt Field at Holmes Stadium.
The Bison notched their first win of the season on the heels of three agonizing one-goal losses. Twenty players saw action in the match, with goalkeeper Reese Dolan and outside backs Klio Kokolis and Lily Moraller all making their first career starts.
Head coach Kelly Cook emphasized a quick start after her side conceded first in each of the three previous games. Andican took it literally, as she put the Bison in front only 46 seconds into the contest. As FDU tried to play the ball out of the back, Andican picked the pocket of the center back and quickly turned and fired home a shot from 22 yards out.
FDU, playing for just the second time this season after dropping its opener at Boston College, drew even in the 23rd minute when Dominique Liberto was knocked to the ground inside the box. Liberto took the penalty kick herself and converted from the spot.
Bucknell's Gaby Parker and FDU's Laura Martinez both had good looks early in the second half but could not convert, and then Gavin cashed in just after the hour mark. Gavin, a first-year center back who came on as a substitute, scored on a first-touch finish from the center of the area after FDU goalkeeper Rosemarie Leblanc punched out Riley Hayes' corner kick.
The Knights had Bucknell under heavy pressure in the final 15 minutes, but the Bison back line held tough. Julia Palitti intervened when FDU striker Marina Burzaco seemed to be in on goal, and Gavin, Sydney Hess, and Ava Palladino all had key shot blocks in the last five minutes.
Dolan was a strong presence in net even though FDU's only official shot on goal was the penalty kick. FDU led 12-11 in total shots, with most of those coming in the late stages.
The Bison will now have a full week off before hosting Villanova next Sunday at 1 p.m.
