LEWISBURG, Pa. – Senior goalkeeper Freddie Lapworth was voted as the Patriot League Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year, and was joined by fellow senior Jimmy Pombor on the Preseason All-Patriot League Team as announced by the league office on Wednesday.
Lapworth, the reigning PL Goalkeeper of the Year, continues to collect high honors as a Bison. After a stellar season in goal last year, Lapworth earned a spot on the United Soccer Coaches All-Region First Team and was most recently named as one of nine goalkeepers to the United Soccer Coaches Goalkeepers to Watch List for the upcoming campaign.
The senior played every minute in goal last season for the Bison. His eight clean sheets ranked ninth among D1 programs and was seventh-most in program history for a single season. Lapworth conceded 21 goals in 20 games, ranking 48th among D1 programs for a 1.04 GAA. His .722 save percentage and his 1.06 GAA in the regular season both ranked second in the Patriot League.
Pombor earned a spot on the Preseason All-Patriot League Team after an incredible debut season for Bison last year that saw the holding midfielder become one of the league's premier midfielders along with a selection to last year's All-PL First Team. Pombor, a transfer from Lock Haven, was only one of three Bison to start in all 17 regular season matches, and started in all three of Bucknell's postseason matches.
Pombor was excellent in helping the Bison control the midfield, and notched three points on scoresheet late in the season. An 83rd minute game-winner against Colgate gave the Bison a 1-0 win that helped secure a top-two seed in the PL Tournament. He also provided an assist to Waldemar Kattrup's opening goal in Bucknell's 3-0 win in the PL Championship.
Bucknell's incredible turnaround season in 2024 saw the Bison jump from last place to first place in the Patriot League and ended in the first Patriot League Championship under head coach Dave Brandt and the first in the program since 2014.
The Bison were picked to finish second in the preseason poll with 70 points, only behind Boston with 75 points. Bucknell and Boston both finished with four first-place votes. American was picked third with 67 points, gathering two first-place votes.
Loyola was picked fourth in the poll (54), followed by Colgate (49), Lehigh (40), Navy (31), Lafayette (31), Army (22) and Holy Cross (11).
Bucknell opens the 2025 campaign at Hofstra on Thursday, Aug. 21. The Bison then host St. Bonaventure in the home-opener at Emmitt Field on Sunday, August 24.
