"Last year I was brand new to it," said Bliss. "This year I am coming in seeded fourth and I am going to win it. I would love to be First Team All-American but my goals need to be higher this year. I know what I can do, so I am going in with the intention to win it!"
Bliss enters the national championships as the fourth seed and with six straight first place finishes under her belt. The streak started at the Colonial Relays, continued with consecutive home meets wins, the Bison Outdoor Classic (where she set the West Fields Facility Record) and Bucknell Team Challenge, saw her repeat as conference champions at the Patriot League Outdoor Championships, a conditioning victory at the Princeton Elite Invitational, and the most recent finish at the NCAA East First Round.Â
Her NCAA East First Round placement and school record came in her first attempt when Bliss threw the weapon 57-06m (187-2), easily moving into the pole position and nudging Fiamoncini's old 2021 school record of 185-4 from first. The mark guaranteed her entry into the National Championships and Bliss declined to use her final two attempts. The throw also moved Bliss from 15th nationally to ninth. In a season to date with 33 possible attempts, she passed on three throws and fouled on three others. The other 27 throws averaged a distance of 162 feet, 9 inches.
"I am excited to see what Evelyn does at the NCAAs," said throws coach Ryan Protzman. "She has had a great season of fixing some weaknesses and building on her strengths. Experience is key in track and field. This is her second trip to the National Championships, so she knows what to expect and how to best prepare. She's had a great week of training and told me,"I've been locked in my room alone all week thinking about winning a national title." She's ready and I can't wait to watch her perform on the big stage in the Orange & Blue!"
The star javelineer is not your typical sophomore. She possesses loads of collegiate, national, and international experience. Bliss hails from the coalfields of Western Pennsylvania and pressure and training have burnished her into a javelin diamond.Â
Bucknell head coach Kevin Donner provided further insight:
"Even though Evie is only a sophomore, she has gained so much experience over the past two years at the national and international levels and because of this experience, nothing will overwhelm her. She has won the past two USATF U20 meets and has medaled at the U20 Pan American Games and the U20 World Championships. She made the final at the United States Olympic Trials and, of course, competed at the NCAA National Championships as a freshman."
Bliss' familiarity with Hayward Field might be the X-factor. She has competed multiple times in track & field's holiest site outside of last year's national championships, including winning two U20 National Championships and the 2024 Olympic Trials where she threw her then personal record of 55.82m (183-2) to finish sixth.Â
Donner expanded upon her homefield advantage:
"This will be the fifth time she has competed at Historic Hayward Field, which is the same amount of meets that she has competed at our home facility and more times than any other facility. This is basically her second home. She competes at Hayward again for the USATF National Championships in early August."
Fiamoncini, Bucknell's three-time All-American javelin thrower, keeping close tabs on the program, offered this advice for Bliss:
"The national championship is unlike any other meet. You're surrounded by the best competitors in the country, and the energy in the stadium is always electric. My goal going into the meet was to remain focused and used that energy to my advantage."
Focus and energy will be crucial for Bliss to retain her quick start habit. The 24 competitors are divided into two groups of 12 and each will receive three guaranteed throws. The top nine remaining will earn three more tosses in the finals. Bliss will be the first thrower in the second flight. The wait should not impact the steady sophomore. She threw last at the East First Round out of 48 participants and the layaway proved no hurdle.Â
At the 2024 National Championships, Bliss' best throw of 52.77m (173-1) arrived on her third and final attempt. The toss secured her Second Team All-America status. She missed finals participation by only two feet and three inches.Â
Bliss and Protzman headlined the latest In the Herd produced by The Voice of the Bison, Doug Birdsong.Â

The javelin has been Bucknell's calling card for national championship participation. Five of Bucknell's six All-Americans have been javelineers and seven of its eight NCAA National Championship qualifiers have carried the instrument. Bucknell's 2025 javelin quartet of Bliss, Madelyn Hudak, Melissa Viellette, and Brylee Tereska have ranked as high as seventh nationally. Hudak cracked the top ten list this season and Tereska became the fifth three-time NCAA East qualifier in Bison history.ÂWhat an All-American throw looks like! Bliss' season does not conclude with the national championships. She competes in Germany at the FISU World Championships (July 21-27) and returns to Hayward for the USATF National Championships (July 31-August 3). Last summer, Bliss collected gold at the U20 National Championships and bronze at the U20 World Championships while representing the Red, White, and Blue.Â
