LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell rowing team turned in strong performances in tough racing conditions at the Ford Lake Cup on Saturday in Ypsilanti, Mich., and the victorious Second Varsity Eight has been named Patriot League Boat of the Week.
The 2V8+, under the direction of coxswain Hattie Hopper and stroked by Victoria Miller-Tuchon, clipped West Virginia by just over one second to win its morning preliminary heat, and then the Bison (6:55.8) outrowed runner-up Delaware by two seconds in the final. Eastern Michigan was third, followed by West Virginia, UMass, and Temple.
Logan Moore, Enya Gilroy, Alina Kelly, Chinemere Njoku, Sierra Jordan, Bella Guzman, and Callie VonderHaar also helped power the Bison to the victory in windy, choppy conditions.
Bucknell's Varsity Four also won its Grand Final, while the Varsity Eight placed fourth. In the team points standings, the Bison (27) finished second to Delaware (32) and ahead of Massachusetts (24), Eastern Michigan (14), Temple (14), West Virginia (8), High Point (4), and Duquesne (3).
This is Bucknell's second Patriot League Boat of the Week citation this season. The Varsity Four was honored on Apr. 15 after a third-place performance at the Knecht Cup.
The Bison are now less than three weeks away from the Patriot League Championships on the Cooper River in New Jersey. They will have one more tune-up, the Women's Sprints on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass., on May 4.
