BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Paige Richter fired a career-best 1-under-par 71, and the Bucknell women's golf team compiled a 297 team score to move up to third place on day two of the Patriot League Championship at Saucon Valley Country Club. Richter's 71 and Bucknell's 297 were the low individual and team rounds ever for the Bison at the Patriot League Championship.
Bucknell counted four scores of 78 or better, and the 9-over 297 was 30 strokes better than its first-round score on Friday. With a 36-hole total of 624, Bucknell trails Navy (584) and Boston University (616) and leads Lehigh (631) and Holy Cross (650) heading into Sunday's final round.
Richter was the star of the day, fighting off a couple of early bogeys to make five birdies in her round. She was 1-over at the turn, then posted a 2-under 34 on the inward nine. It was the 12th under-par round in Bucknell history and the first at a Patriot League Championship. Minjoo Lee carded a 2-under 70 at the 2010 Big South Championship when the Bison were a member of that conference.
Nicole Yun followed Richter with a 1-over 73. Yun made two birdies and 13 pars on the way to her best-ever postseason round. Sophia Bardunias, who led the Bison with a 78 in the opening round, played her final six holes in 1-under and finished with a 75. Lila Smith was the fourth counter with a 78. Smith was even-par at the turn. Katherine Vice's 80 and Tara Thomas's 83 were not used in the play-6, count-4 format.
Richter (T-6th) and Bardunias (8th) are both in the top 10 through 36 holes, and Yun is knocking on the door in a tie for 12th place, two shots outside the top 10.
The top four on the individual leaderboard are all from Navy, led by Emma Tang in first place at 1-under 143 (73-70). Her second-round 70 was the only score in the field better than Richter's 71.
By moving into third place, the Bison will play with Navy and Boston University in the final groups on Sunday. Those tee times begin at 10 a.m. off the first tee.
