Baseball Drops Both Games of Twin Bill to Holy Cross

LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to Holy Cross on Sunday at Depew Field, falling 8-6 and 7-3.
Senior Tyler Dunn had three hits, three RBIs and a walk on the day. Dunn was 1-for-4 in Game 1 with three RBIs. The first baseman did well to advance runners as all three RBIs came via a productive out. Dunn now sports a 27-game on-base streak for the Bison.
Sophomore Billy Fluharty got back on track after going five games without a hit, going for three knocks on the day. The center fielder was 2-for-2 in Game 1 with a walk and a triple.
Senior Billy Kender, junior Michael Trommer, sophomore Chris Morabito and freshman John Calabrese all had a hit in each games. Kender is rocking a 16-game on-base streak and Trommer has an 11-game streak.
Trommer drove in two runs in Game 1 for the Bison. Morabito had an RBI in each game, launching his second home run of the season to right in Game 2.
Senior Ben Magovern was excellent in his start on the mound in Game 2. The left-hander allowed just one earned run on four hits in six innings of work. Magovern fanned five batters and walked one.
Bucknell (13-21, 5-10 PL) had plenty of opportunities to plate runs, leaving 22 runners on base between the two games. Holy Cross (18-19, 9-6 PL) left just 11 runners on base.
Game 1: Holy Cross 8, Bucknell 6 (7 inn.)
The Bison led 3-2 after three innings until a four-run fourth inning by the Crusaders flipped the script. Holy Cross tacked on two more in the fifth to make it an 8-4 game, and Bucknell's sixth-inning rally fell just short.
Holy Cross jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. The Bison loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom half, but only pushed one run across on an RBI ground out from Morabito and stranded two runners.
The Bison quickly tied and took the lead in the second inning. Karp walked and Calabrese singled, setting up a wild play on a Fluharty bunt. Fluharty dropped the bunt down perfectly, and forced the throw wide. Fluharty and the first baseman collided, and the ball trickled towards right field to allow Karp to score. Calabrese then came home on a ground out by Dunn to make it 3-2.
Holy Cross had a runner on first with two outs in the fourth before its four-run rally kicked off. A walk followed by a single scored two runs before a big two-run double made it a 6-3 game.
Dunn worked another RBI ground out in the fourth, but the Crusaders piled on two more in the top of the fifth. The Bison had two runners in scoring position in the sixth with no outs. A sacrifice fly by Dunn drove in a run, and a Trommer single scored another to make it 8-6.
Game 2: Holy Cross 7, Bucknell 3
The Bison took a 2-1 lead into the seventh before another big inning by the Crusaders flipped the game on its head. Holy Cross tied the game 2-2 before a two-out grand slam by John LaFleur broke open the ballgame.
Morabito quickly brought the game to life with a lead off home run in the second inning. The left-handed hitter got all of the second pitch he saw, crushing his fourth career homer to right field.
Holy Cross answered immediately, tying the game 1-1 on an RBI double in the top of the third. Another single looked to give the Crusaders the lead, but Morabito acted quickly and threw the runner out at home from left field.
The Bison took the lead in the fifth inning, loading the bases with no outs. Trommer was plunked with bags full, and the Bison took a 2-1 lead. Holy Cross pitcher Derek Volz fought back in the inning, striking out the next three batters to limit the damage. BU loaded the bases again in the sixth, but stranded all three runners.
The Crusaders led off the seventh with a single, and a wild pitch and two ground outs brought the run home to tie the game 2-2. With two outs, a double and a walk loaded the bases, setting up the grand slam by LaFleur to make it 6-2.
Trommer singled up the middle to bring in a run as the first three Bison batters in the eighth got on board with a single, but BU stranded two runners and came away with just the one run. Another rally by Holy Cross in the ninth tacked on another run, and the Bison went down in order to end the game.
Both sides had eight hits in the game. The Bison drew seven walks and three hit-batters, but ultimately stranded 15 base runners in the game.Â
Bucknell is back in action on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m., wrapping up an eight-game home stand with a single game against Navy. Â
