Lakeland, Fla. -- A six-goal unanswered streak in the second quarter proved to be what separated Bucknell from Xavier in its 12-8 victory on Friday at the University of South Florida. The Bison moved to 4-2 on the season with the win and extended its winning streak to three.
The go-ahead goal in the six-goal unanswered streak not only gave the Bison a 5-4 lead, but it also served as a go-ahead goal for Allie Boyce as it officially earned her a share of fourth place in career goals at Bucknell. She didn't stop there however as she notched two more goals before the end of the game to give her an outright hold of third place in Bucknell history in career goals with 130 total.
Boyce wasn't the only player to hit the top of the Bucknell record books in this game. Taylor McClain notched her 72nd assist, which earned her a share of third place all-time at Bucknell with Melissa Montefusco '02.
The first quarter of play was a back-and-forth game with Bucknell trying to catch up to Xavier throughout the first fifteen minutes, and the Bison saw themselves down by one goal heading into the second. The second quarter began with a Xavier goal, but the Bison bucked up and scored six unanswered goals to end the half in the lead by four. The third quarter read like the first, but this time the Bison outscored the Musketeers 3-2. In the fourth, Xavier began a late comeback as they scored two goals back-to-back within the last two minutes, but the charge would come too late for the Musketeers and Bucknell took the victory 12-8.
Bucknell goalie Colleen Kazanjian played the full sixty minutes and had seven saves in the game. The Bison were also successful on the clear as they went 21-25.
The Bison out-shot the Musketeers 30-20 and 19-15 on goal. The Musketeers weakness throughout the game was in turnovers, where they had 26, and the Bison capitalized on those opportunities especially in the second quarter to take the win. Bucknell still struggled on the draw, only grabbing four to Xavier's 19.
This game marked the first of the spring break Florida series. The Bison will take on USF on Tuesday, March 11 at 6 p.m.
