LEWISBURG, Pa. – Freshman outfielder John Calabrese has been a revelation for the Bucknell baseball team since entering the lineup earlier this month, and on Monday he earned Patriot League Rookie of the Week and Bison of the Week honors.
In doubleheaders against Holy Cross and Army over the weekend, the Staten Island native went 7-for-12 at the plate with five walks and four runs batted in. He reached base in 13 of his 19 plate appearances and extending his hitting streak to six games.
Calabrese made his collegiate debut at Florida Atlantic on March 11 and delivered a pinch-hit RBI single. He recorded another pinch-hit knock two days later and has been in the starting lineup ever since. In 14 games with 10 starts this season, he is 17-for-37 and is slashing .459/.592/.568 for an OPS of 1.160, all while playing a solid right field defensively. Calabrese has four doubles and has driven in nine runs thanks to a 7-for-14 ledger with runners in scoring position.
Bucknell swept a doubleheader from Holy Cross on Friday before dropping two to Army the following day. The Bison are now 3-5 in Patriot League play and 11-15 overall. They visit Penn State for a single game on Tuesday before returning to conference action with home doubleheaders against Lehigh and Lafayette this Saturday and Sunday.
