Baseball Drops Both Games of a Doubleheader at Army

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Bucknell baseball team was swept in a doubleheader against Army, falling 14-8 and 9-7 on Saturday at Doubleday Field. Freshman John Calabrese had five hits and two RBIs on the day, extending his hitting streak to six games while notching his first career three-hit game. Calabrese is now batting .459 for the Bison.
Junior Michael Trommer launched his second and third home runs of the season. Trommer got the Bison off to a hot start with a three-run bomb in the first inning of Game 1, then later hit a solo shot late in Game 2.
Senior Tyler Dunn extended his hitting streak to 10 games and his on-base streak to 19 games. Dunn had three hits and an RBI on the day. Calabrese drew two walks and Dunn drew one. Calabrese exits the four-game weekend with an incredible .592 on-base percentage and a 1.160 OPS. Dunn sports a .511 on-base percentage to go along with a .358 batting average and a 1.093 OPS.
Sophomore Billy Fluharty had a hit in each game to up his hitting streak to five games and his on-base streak to 11 games. Senior Brady Karp upped his on-base streak to nine games, launching his first home run of the season in Game 1. Karp drew a walk and was hit by a pitch in the game. Karp has been hit by eight pitches in the 12 games he has played in.
Sophomore Chris Morabito reached base in eight of his nine plate appearances. The left fielder had a hit and drew three walks in both games.
Army's Chris Barr was a terror at the plate, going 8-for-9 with four RBIs and seven runs scored between the two games. Barr was 5-for-5 in the first game, and a perfect 8-for-8 until his final at-bat. William Parker matched Trommer's power, also hitting a home run in each game for the Black Knights.
The Bison left a lot on the table, stranding 26 base runners on the day.
GAME 1: Army 14, Bucknell 8
Army (11-15, 6-5 PL)Â overcame a seven-run first inning by Bucknell (11-15, 3-5 PL) to take Game 1. Army answered with two in the bottom half before exploding for a six-run second inning to take the lead. Luke Nascimento scored on a wild pitch in the top of the third to tie it 8-8, but Army continued to hit the ball hard for four more runs in the bottom half.
Both teams used the long ball as the Bison and Black Knights each hit two in the game. It was the Bison getting the jump early as Trommer and Karp each hit a three-run home run in the first inning.
Trommer homered to left field in the fourth at-bat of the game, bringing in Fluharty and Dunn who both singled to lead off the game. Ryan Facinelli doubled and Chris Morabito drew a walk to continue the rally, setting up an RBI single by the red-hot Calabrese. Karp then brought everyone home on a hard-hit line drive to left that got over the wall.
Army's offense began to click quickly, scoring two runs on four hits in the first. Thomas Schreck hit a two-run homer in second, and the Black Knights rallied four more hits in the inning to take an 8-7 lead.
Parker hit a three-run shot in the third at-bat of the third inning to quickly take the lead back 11-8. Army got another in the inning and two more in the sixth to push the lead to 14-8.
Bucknell had plenty of chances to add more runs, stranding eight runners after the big first inning. The Bison stranded two runners in both the third and fifth innings, and left them loaded in the fourth.
Dunn and Calabrese each had a multi-hit game as eight batters in the lineup had a hit and every batter reached base safely once in the game. Calabrese was 2-for-2 with two walks and an RBI. Chris Morabito was 1-for-1, drawing three walks in the game.
Army tagged the Bison pitching staff, scoring its 14 runs on 15 hits. The Black Knights tallied seven extra-base hits, drew seven walks.and struck out just four times.
Game 2: Army 9, Bucknell 7
Army came out on top in a back-and-forth Game 2. Bucknell used a big three-run inning to tie the game 5-5 in the fifth, but Army answered with four runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 9-5 lead. The Bison came back from multiple deficits in the game, but the Black Knights had the answer each time to fend off BU.
Bucknell opened the scoring in the top of the first inning as Fluharty and Kender swapped places with doubles in the first three at-bats. The Bison loaded the bases with two outs, but left all three stranded.
Army quickly took its first lead of the game with two runs in the bottom of the first. Army looked to score another, but the umpire was hit with the ball on an infield single, and the runner from third was forced to stay. Junior Mikey Myro then stranded three runners to get out of the jam.
Both teams went quiet in the second and third inning before a spree of scoring changes and crooked numbers. Dunn drove in Calabrese, who singled to lead off the frame, in the top of the fourth with an RBI single to right field to tie the game 2-2.
Parker's second home run of the day was a three-run shot in the bottom of the fourth to retake the lead for Army, 5-2.
Morabito singled, and Facinelli and Garrison Bullock walked to start the fifth. Facinelli scored on a wild pitch, which set up an RBI double down the right field line by Calabrese to make it 5-4. Bullock tied the game, beating the throw home on a ground ball chopped into no-man's land to the right of the pitcher by Karp. BU had the bases loaded, but a 6-4-3 double play stranded all three runners.
The Black Knights used a four-run inning to take its biggest lead of the game in the bottom half of the fifth. Army loaded the bags, setting up a bases-clearing triple by Barr for his third hit of the game. Barr then scored on an error by the Bison to make it a 9-5 game.
Trommer's second homer of the day was a solo blast to right-center field to get the Bison a run back in the sixth. The Bison looked to rally again in the seventh with the bases loaded and one out. Facinelli hit a sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to 9-7, but it was all the Bison could manage.
Sophomore Jonathan Adelmann came on to pitch in relief in the fifth. Adelmann allowed an inherited run to score before seeing out the game for BU with three scoreless innings and four strikeouts. Adelmann now has a 2.11 ERA with 28 strikeouts in 21.1 innings this season.Â
The Bison travel to Penn State on Tuesday for a single, 5:30 p.m. game at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. The game will mark the end of a 14-game road stand before kicking off a nine-game home stand next Saturday against Lehigh.
