RESULTS
LA JOLLA, Calif. – Backed by 3-over-par 75s from Michael Rudnick and James Key, the Bucknell men's golf team posted a 309 team total on Monday in the second round of the UC San Diego Invitational at the famed Torrey Pines South Course. The Bison were 15 shots better than their opening-round score and remained in 19th place with 18 holes still to come on Tuesday morning.
Rudnick birdied the par-5 sixth hole and made 14 pars on the way to his 75. Key tallied back-to-back birdies at 7 and 8 and had nothing worse than bogey on the 7,802-yard South Course, which has hosted two U.S. Opens and is the annual spot for the Farmers Insurance Open on the PGA Tour.
Scores were lower across the field in round two. No team in the field broke 300 on Sunday, but Sacramento State cobbled together a 2-over 290 to take a five-shot lead in the team standings. Sac State is at 593 through 36 holes, with Arkansas State second at 598. Utah State (599), UC Irvine (602), and New Mexico State (602) round out the top five.
The individual round of the day was a 4-under 68 from Arkansas State's Thomas Schmidt. He is now 5-under for the tournament and has a five-shot lead over Kevin Li of Seattle. Three others are tied for third at +2.
The third and final round gets underway with a shotgun start at 10 a.m. Eastern (7 a.m. local) on Tuesday.
