LA JOLLA, Calif. – The Bucknell men's golf team this week is taking on one of the most famous – and most challenging – courses in the country, and the Bison opened the UC San Diego Invitational with a 324 team score on Sunday at the Torrey Pines South Course.
Jack Hartman shot a team-best 79 for the Bison, who are in 19th place after the first of three rounds. Patrick Pritsios shot 81, and Michael Rudnick and James Key both shot 82. James Robbins' 84 was discarded. All five Bison made one birdie on the day.
None of the 20 teams in the field broke 300 on a Torrey Pines South Course that played to 7.802 yards. The average score was 78.55, and the field combined for 207 birdies against 760 bogeys or worse. The South Course has hosted two U.S. Opens and is the annual spot for the Farmers Insurance Open on the PGA Tour.
CSU Northridge and New Mexico State are tied for the team lead at 13-over 301. Sacramento State and UC Riverside are both two shots back, and UC Irvine is fifth at 304.
There is a three-way tie atop the individual leaderboard as New Mexico State's Aidan Thomas, Arkansas State's Thomas Schmidt, and Lehigh's Jake Roth all shot 1-under 71. George Mason's Vaughn McMeans and CSUN's Dominic De Luca are one shot behind.
Round two gets underway with a shotgun start at 4 p.m. Eastern (1 p.m. local) on Monday.
