Baseball Uses Big Seven-Run Inning to Take Down Navy in Series Finale for First Patriot League Win

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Tyler Dunn and John Calabrese combined for four hits and five RBIs to help lift the Bucknell baseball team to its first Patriot League win of the season in an 8-1 victory over Navy in the series finale on Sunday afternoon at Terwilliger Brothers Field. The Bison held a 1-0 lead into the seventh before the Orange and Blue broke it wide open with a seven-run frame to snap Navy's five-game winning streak and end a four-game skid of their own.
Dunn was 2-for-3 with three RBIs on the day and 7-for-14 with five RBIs in the four-game series. Dunn extended his hitting streak to six games and his on-base streak to 15 games. Over the last six games, Dunn is batting .545 with five multi-hit games.
John Calabrese stayed hot at the plate, driving in a career-high two runs as part of his second straight multi-hit game. Calabrese walked to lead off the third inning, helping to set up an RBI double down the right field line to get the Bison in front 1-0 early.
Calabrese then started the seventh-inning rally with a double over the center fielder's head. The right fielder then came back around later in the inning with a two-run single into right field to make it a 7-0 ballgame.
Senior Brady Swenson earned his first win of the season, tossing 2.2 scoreless innings in relief of junior Mikey Myro. Myro made his 2025 debut, allowing a hit and a walk before his day was done after 1.1 innings. Myro picked up a strikeout on the first batter he faced.
Swenson took over with a runner on second base in the second inning, working a ground ball and a fly ball to strand the runner. Swenson only allowed a walk as he fanned three batters over the next two innings.
Freshman Sam Janik tossed a scoreless inning in the fifth. The right-hander allowed a one-out double, but stranded the runner with two quick ground outs. Janik has allowed just one earned run in his last three appearances, spanning six innings.
Senior Brady Karp drew a walk and sophomore Billy Fluharty laid down a perfect bunt to load the bases with no outs after Calabrese's lead off double in the seventh. Dunn stepped up to the plate to knock a two-run single back up the middle to give Bucknell a 3-0 advantage.
A walk by Senior Billy Kender set up a fielder's choice on a good piece of hitting by junior Michael Trommer to drive in a run. Junior Ryan Facinelli wore a pitch to re-load the bases, and sophomore Luke Nascimento then was hit with a pitch up high to bring in another.
Calabrese continued the rally and his great day at the plate with a hard-hit single through the right side to knock in two more runs. Nascimento then scored on a wild pitch to make it 8-0 and cap off the rally.
Junior Hadley Maxwell tossed two scoreless innings in relief for Bucknell (9-13, 1-3 PL). He ran into some trouble in the eighth as Navy (12-11, 5-2 PL) loaded the bases with one out. Sophomore Jonathan Adelmann took over and forced two fly outs, with a run coming home to end Bucknell's shutout bid. Adelmann then stranded two runners in ninth to close out the ballgame.
Maxwell finished with a line of one earned run on one hit and three walks in 2.1 innings. Maxwell sports a 1.50 ERA in 15.0 innings this season for the Bison.
Adelmann struck out two in the ninth, and allowed no earned runs on two hits in 1.2 innings. Adelmann bounced back with a solid outing after getting tagged for five runs over his last two appearances.
Fluharty was 2-for-4 with a walk and a run scored out of the lead off spot for the Bison. Fluharty, Dunn and Calabrese combined for six of the seven Bison hits.
Calabrese is now hitting .400 on the season with a .516 on base percentage in 10 games. Dunn is currently hitting .380 with a 1.209 OPS on the year.
Brady Karp was back in action after missing some time with injury. Karp scored a run after drawing a walk and laid down a sacrifice bunt that set up Dunn's RBI single in the third. The shortstop stayed busy in the field with three putouts and three assists.
Bucknell is back in action with a single game at Penn State on Wednesday evening at 5:30 p.m. The Bison are back in Patriot League action over the weekend with a doubleheader at Holy Cross on Saturday.
