ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Bucknell baseball team fell to Navy in its Patriot League opener, 4-3 at Terwilliger Brothers Field on Friday afternoon. The Bison took a 3-1 lead into the ninth before the Midshipmen rallied off three hits and a walk to tie it, then later walked off in extra innings.
Senior Tyler O'Neill rattled off another gem on the mound, going eight innings with just one earned run on four hits with five strikeouts. O'Neill had shut out the Midshipmen for seven innings before an eighth-inning rally put Navy on the board.
Sophomore Jonathan Adelmann took over in the ninth, but the Navy bats got going with its leadoff hitter singling up the middle. Adelmann struck out two straight batters, but a walk put runners on first and second. The walk set up consecutive RBI singles by Evan Brown and Ivan Aguirre to tie the game 3-3.
A walk and a hit batter gave the Midshipmen two quick base runners in the 10th inning, setting up the walk-off hit to left centerfield by this week's Patriot League Rookie of the Week, Ty DePerno.
Bucknell outhit Navy in the game, 9-8. Eight of BU's nine starters had a hit, with sophomore Luke Nascimento going for two. Nascimento broke the scoreless deadlock with an RBI double over the right fielder in the sixth inning. The catcher reached base safely in four of his plate appearances, walking twice.
Senior Tyler Dunn was 1-for-3 with two walks to extend his on-base streak to 12 games. Dunn is on a three-game hitting streak with six hits in those games. John Calabrese had a hit and an RBI. Calabrese made it 2-0 with a bases-loaded walk in the eighth. The freshman is riding a five-game hitting streak and has reached base safely in all eight games he has played since being inserted into the lineup against Florida Atlantic.
Junior Michael Trommer is also on a five-game hitting streak, and he had the only other RBI for the Bison in the contest. Trommer scored on Nascimento's double after leading the inning off with a single. Trommer then tacked on an insurance run in the ninth on a groundout on a good piece of hitting.
Bucknell had plenty of chances to break the game open, stranding 11 runners in the game. The Bison stranded at least two runners with only one out on the board in three separate innings. BU's biggest chance came in the eighth after Calabrese walked to make it 2-0, but a ground ball double play got Navy out of the jam.
Bucknell continues the series with Navy with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. tomorrow at Terwilliger Brothers Field. The Bison and Midshipmen finish the series with a single game on Sunday.
