CLAREMONT, Calif. – Adam Stavrakas continued his hot streak with another doubles win with Oscar Bain Moreno de Vega along with a dominant singles win at love, but the Bucknell men's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to Division III power Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Sunday. The Bison fell to 7-3 in dual matches this spring, while the Stags improved to 6-2.
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps entered the match ranked No. 2 in the latest ITA Division III rankings, and the Stags are likely to move up after beating No. 1 Chicago to win the ITA Indoor Championships in Minnesota last week. Bucknell got out to a good start by taking the doubles point, but three-set wins for CMS at No. 5 and 6 singles proved to be the difference.
Stavrakas and Bain were fresh off a run to the quarterfinals of the Pacific Coast Doubles Championship on this trip, and they clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 win over Advik Mareedu and Josh Kim in the No. 2 position. A few minutes earlier, Amar Tahirovic and Brendan McDonald won 6-1 over Caleb Settles and Brandon Vu at No. 1.
In singles, Stavrakas made quick work of Tarm Rojanasoonthon 6-0, 6-0 on Court 2, but CMS won the other five singles tilts.
Mareedu, the No. 1 ranked singles player in Division III, defeated Stavrakas 7-5, 6-3 at No. 1, and Matthew Robinson and Anirudh Gupta won at 3 and 4. Brendan McDonald at No. 5 and Nelson Alapi at No. 6 split their first two sets but ended up dropping the third.
Bucknell returns to action next Saturday in Richmond, Va. The Bison will take on Richmond and Longwood in a pair of dual matches.
