Boston, Mass. — After three quarters of back-and-forth play and a tied score going into the final fifteen minutes, a fourth-quarter scoring surge by Boston University earned the Terriers their first Patriot League win of the season, 10-8. Bucknell fell to an overall 4-4 on the season and 0-1 in Patriot League play.
The Bison held a small lead over the Terriers, not allowing them to take it through almost three full quarters of the game. Throughout that 45 minutes of play the two teams showed their defensive strengths and did not let up, leading to a low-scoring game where every shot mattered. Bucknell found a two-goal lead, the largest it had in the game, and was able to maintain that until the third quarter, when the Terriers were able to tie it up 6-6. Since Boston University went up 1-0 to start off the day, it did not see a lead again until breaking that 6-6 tie in the final quarter. The Terriers then found steady momentum and notched three more goals in a row to go up 10-6 with just over five minutes of play remaining.
Bucknell put up a fight in the final minutes of the game with Megan Krestinski scoring back-to-back goals to bring the contest within two, but the comeback came too late as the clock expired, leaving Bucknell with a heartbreaking conference loss.
Krestinski's two late-game goals were part of a hat-trick for the junior, who led the team in scoring and was one of five Bison to find the back of the net. Alex Nesbitt notched two goals in the second quarter and Katie Browne and Caroline Sheridan also found the back of the net in the game.
Taylor McClain continued climbing up the ranks in the Bucknell record book for all-time career assists, recording three in this game, bringing her just three shy of the No. 2 spot in Bucknell history. McClain now has 75 assists.
This matchup proved to be a low-scoring feat that was highlighted by defense, turnovers, and solid goalie play. The Bison recorded 16 turnovers and caused 12 while the Terriers had 18 turnovers and caused 13.
Both goalies had solid performances in the back of the net, each recording nine saves on the afternoon. Colleen Kazanjian played all 60 minutes for the Bison and posted a .474 save percentage having nine saves and ten goals against.
The Bison started off slowly on the draw, as they did not have control once in the first quarter, but they saw more positive results on the draw later in the game as they controlled 10 of 22, improving in that area of play from their last game.
Bucknell will now head back to Lewisburg for a slate of home games starting on Saturday, March 22 at 3 p.m. as the Bison take on Navy at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium as part of a doubleheader day with men's lacrosse.
