GREENSBORO, N.C. – Behind more strong play from the top of the lineup, the Bucknell men's tennis team downed UNC Greensboro by a 5-1 count on Monday afternoon at the UNCG Tennis Courts. The Bison rebounded from a tough 4-3 loss at Richmond on Saturday and moved to 8-4 on the season.
Adam Stavrakas, Oscar Bain Moreno de Vega, and Liam Kilmer were all two-time winners as the Bison improved to 1-1 all-time against the Spartans. UNCG won the only other meeting 6-1 in 2017.
All three doubles matches were close, and the Bison picked up wins on Courts 2 and 3 to grab the point. After the two sides split the first two matches, Liam Kilmer and Shiv Singh pulled out a 7-5 win over Andrew Black and Devon Moskowitz at No. 3. The Bison tandem won the first three games of the set, fell behind 5-4, and then won three straight to finish it off.
Bain and Stavrakas continued their strong recent play with a 6-4 win over Luke Thomson and William Elmers at No. 2. Amar Tahirovic and Brendan McDonald lost in a tiebreaker to Tymofy Khrystyuk and John Gabelic at No. 1.
Stavrakas and Tahirovic have been dominant all season in the top two spots in the lineup. They have alternated between the 1 and 2 positions, and the Bison are now 9-1 at No. 1 and 12-0 at No. 2 in dual matches this spring.
Stavrakas, now 23-3 overall on the season, defeated Khrystyuk 6-4, 6-4 on Court 1, and then Tahirovic bageled Gabelic 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 to improve to 20-3.
Bain won a three-setter from Luke Thomson at No. 3, and Kilmer was a 6-4, 6-4 winner over Black in the match-clincher at No. 4. Singh won the first set and was 6-6 in the second against Elmers when the match was halted due to rain.
This was the first of three matches in the state of North Carolina during Bucknell's Spring Break week. The Bison will face Elon on Tuesday and Davidson on Friday.
