ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Connor Thurston earned Diver of the Meet honors, and seven individuals and two relays scored points on Saturday as the Bucknell men's swimming & diving team held on to fourth place at the ECAC Open Championships at Navy's Lejeune Hall.
Â
Bucknell upped its total to 229 points and trails only Navy (511.5), Columbia (330.5), and Loyola (316.5) with one more day of competition still to come. Fairfield is in fifth place with 171 points, and 22 teams have scored points thus far.
Â
Thurston backed up Friday's gold medal in the 1-meter diving competition with a runner-up finish on the 3-meter board on Saturday afternoon. His 256.40 aggregate trailed only Ben Bradley of George Washington, who posted 325.10. Navy's Aidan McInerney was third with 221.20.
Â
Two of Bucknell's best swims of the night came from freshmen in the 200-yard freestyle, where Dante Buonadonna finished fifth and Finn Franks ninth. Franks made the B Final with a 15th-place finish in the morning prelims, and then in the evening he went nearly two full seconds faster. His 1:38.05 not only won the heat, but it would have been good for fourth in the A Final and was the fourth-fastest time in school history. Buonadonna's 1:38.46 was only .05 outside the top 10.
Â
Caleb Kubiak had a good night with a fifth-place finish in the 400 individual medley, and he also swam the third leg on the 800 free relay team that placed third behind Navy and Columbia. Sam Sweetser, Chris Kopac, and Alex Crossing rounded out the relay.
Â
The evening session began with a seventh-place finish in the 200 medley relay. Avery Kuhn, William Harpster, Justin DiSanto, and Drew Greene posted a time of 1:31.37.
Â
DiSanto came back later to win the B Final in the 100 backstroke with the eighth-fastest time (49.66) in school history. Kuhn was right behind in 10th place.
Â
Will Hedges finished seventh and Matt Raudabaugh 13th in the 100 breaststroke.
Â
The ECAC Championships wrap up on Sunday with prelims starting at 9 a.m. and finals at 4 p.m.
