STEPHENVILLE, Texas -- Bucknell (1-4) concluded the Texan Classic with a 12-4 defeat to the Marist Red Foxes (1-4) on Sunday morning. The Bison led 2-1 before the veteran foe dropped seven runs in the fifth inning and 11 runs over the final three frames to gain control.

Madison Roukey started in the circle for the Bison and Marist jumped for a quick run off a triple and a single combo. Another single presented more danger but the wily Roukey escaped.

Roukey obtained two quick outs in the third frame but yielded two singles and a walk. She worked carefully and ended the danger by inducing a fielder's choice.

Bucknell seized a 2-1 lead in its third frame. Angelina Seropian singled and Kate Dailor entered as a pinch runner and promptly stole second. Savannah Jones added a single. Shea Malone sent the two runners home with a double off the left field wall.

The Bison missed a chance to build its lead in the fourth inning. Molly Lawson singled and Seropian walked amidst two outs bringing Jones to the plate. The senior batter hit a beautiful single up the middle. Lawson was sent home but the ball arrived before she did and the opportunity was lost.

The fifth inning saw the roof cave in. Two quick singles chased Roukey from the game and Jones entered the circle. A sacrifice bunt placed runners at second and third. Two straight singles gave Marist the lead. A sacrifice bunt tallied another run. With two outs an error by Brooke Popella brought home another run and prolonged the inning. The mistake immediately proved costly when the next batter tripled to right field scoring two more Red Foxes.

Bucknell responded with two runs in its fifth frame. MaKenzie Hilling, showcasing her keen batter's eye, walked and Popella atoned for her error with an RBI triple. Bella Radican drove in Popella with a well-placed grounder.

Marist tacked on a run in the following inning with a solo home run.

Payton Hale was called upon for the seventh inning and received a rough greeting from the Red Foxes. A walk and two singles scored the first run. A third single loaded the bases. A wild pitch escaped scoring a Red Fox. A sacrifice fly provided the final run in the 12-4 defeat.

Up Next

Bucknell has a bye next weekend and resumes action with a three-game series at Delaware State (Feb. 22-23).
