WEST POINT, N.Y. – Ryan Curry scored 11 of his career-high 30 points in the second overtime period, leading Army West Point to a wild 116-110 win over Bucknell on Saturday afternoon at Christl Arena. Both teams shot well over 50 percent and combined for 30 3-pointers, and the Black Knights used a key 8-0 run in double overtime to break a second-place tie in the Patriot League standings.
Bucknell tied the NCAA record with its eighth overtime game of the season, and this was the highest-scoring game in team history. The previous mark was 225 points in 119-106 win over Colgate in 1968. It was also the highest scoring game between two Patriot League opponents in league history.
Noah Williamson scored 29 points to lead Bucknell, and he hit the tying baskets at the end of both regulation and the first overtime period. Josh Bascoe scored a career-high 25 points, and Achile Spadone (17) and Elvin Edmonds IV (12) also scored in double figures. Spadone added eight rebounds and six assists to his 17 points.
In addition to Curry's 30, Jalen Rucker added 25 and Josh Scovens had 23 for Army, which set a new team scoring record. The Black Knights came into the game ranked ninth in the Patriot League in 3-point shooting at 32.9 percent, but they went 17-for-29 in this one and shot 58.2 percent overall.
Bucknell fought back from an early 13-point deficit to go up by four in the second half, but the Bison seemed doomed when Army went back up by 13 again late in regulation. AJ Allenspach's layup with 3:17 remaining gave Army an 87-74 lead, but those would be the Black Knights' final points of regulation. Williamson's layup at the other end ignited a wild 13-0 run that forced extra time.
After Allenspach missed the front end of a 1-and-1, Bascoe hit a floater, McCreesh canned a 3-pointer in transition, and Pip Ajayi scored on a breakaway to make it a two-point game. Spadone forced Rucker into a long contested two, and after the Bison rebounded and called timeout, Williamson tied it on a reverse layup with 16 seconds left. Curry missed from deep, and these two teams went to overtime for only the third time ever and for the first time since 2018.
The two sides alternated buckets throughout the first overtime period. Williamson's finish off a lob pass tied the game at 99-99 with 0:26 left in OT. The Bison forced a turnover, and then Bascoe's halfcourt attempt was off the mark.
Bascoe and Curry swapped 3-pointers to start the second overtime session. Bucknell went up 105-102 on two Williamson free throws, but Rucker's layup ignited an 8-0 Army run. The Bison missed a couple of corner threes and a follow-up attempt, and the Black Knights finished the game with 10 straight made free throws to put it away.
Bucknell trailed by 13 points early in the contest but rallied within six by intermission and took its first lead on a Jayden Williams 3-pointer with 12:30 remaining. Two free throws by Spadone stretched the margin to four at 66-62, but then Army got it going from downtown again. The Black Knights hit three in a row from deep, two coming from Jorn Everson, who was 12-for-42 on the season entering the day.
The 9-0 run gave Army the lead back at 71-66. Williamson's layup made it a one-point game again at 74-73, but then the Bison turned the ball over on five straight possessions, leading to a seemingly decisive 9-0 run for the Black Knights.
Scovens, who came in shooting 22.7 percent from 3-point range, made it a 4-for-4 day to key the surge. Ryan Curry's tip-in off a rare Army miss made it an 83-73 game with 4:59 to go.
Army hit its first six shots of the game while the Bison started 2-for-10, and that helped lead to an early 19-6 lead for the Black Knights. Bucknell's bench sparked a comeback later in the half, with 3-pointers from Williams and McCreesh igniting a 13-for-20 shooting display over the rest of the half.
Layups from Ajayi and Josh Fulton, followed by a Bascoe 3-pointer, accounted for a 7-0 run and drew the Bison within two at 36-34. Army hit three 3-pointers in the final two minutes of the half, including two in a row from Kevin McCarthy that shoved the margin back to eight, but Williamson scored in the paint in the closing seconds to make it a 46-40 game at the half.
Bucknell shot 56.2 percent from the field and hit 13 of 33 from long range. Free-throw shooting was a big difference. Army was 21-for-25 compared to Bucknell's 15-for-27. The Bison finished with a 37-34 edge on the glass and led 52-36 in points in the paint.
Bucknell joined Western Kentucky (1978), Portland (1984), and Vaparaiso (1993) with eight overtime games in a season. This was Bucknell's third double-OT contest, meaning the Bison have now played 55 minutes worth of extra time.
The Bison are back in action on Wednesday at home against Boston University.
