RESULTS
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Led by a gold-medal performance from Connor Thurston in the 1-meter diving event, the Bucknell men's swimming and diving team picked up 88 points on the opening night of the ECAC Open Championships at Navy's Lejeune Hall, and the Bison are in fourth place in a large field.
The host Midshipmen opened up a sizable lead with 288.5 points, with Loyola in second with 141.5. Columbia is in third with 99 points, and Bucknell and Delaware are tied for fourth with 88. The Bison and Blue Hens are 26 points clear of sixth-place Fairfield. A total of 19 teams scored points in the five events contested on Friday night.
The ECAC meet provides an opportunity for those who did not compete at last week's Patriot League Championships to swim in a competitive meet, and for those who did compete last week to improve their times or enter different events.
Thurston posted a 270.30 score on the 1-meter board to outpace runner-up Sean Kennedy of Navy, who tallied a 243.60. Thurston's score moves him into the No. 10 spot on Bucknell's all-time list. Last week at the Patriot League Championships, he posted the eighth-best score in team history on the 3-meter board (285.25).
Avery Kuhn (12th 200 IM), Ed Park (15th 200 IM), and Drew Greene (15th 50 free) were all point-scorers for the first time this postseason.
Senior stalwarts Justin DiSanto and Chris Kopac also swam the 50 free and finished 11th and 12th, respectively.
Bucknell bookended the night with seventh-place relay finishes. William Harpster, Greene, Nick Shopis, and Kopac posted a time of 1:23.01 in the 200 free relay to start the evening. Later, Kuhn, Matt Raudabaugh, Park, and Green combined for a 3:22.85 in the 400 medley relay.
The ECAC Championships continue on Saturday with morning prelims at 10 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m.
