LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell swimmers Andy Dorsel, Chris Kopac, and Skye Sunderhauf were all named to their respective Academic All-Patriot League Teams on Thursday. All three were announced as Second Team All-Patriot League honorees earlier in the week.
Dorsel and Kopac both became four-time All-Patriot League honorees, and now Kopac has earned a spot on the Academic All-Patriot League Team for the third straight year (freshmen are not eligible). He joins Christian Treat (2011-13), Louis Behnen (2015-17), Jack Robinson (2015-17), and Chris Devlin (2016-18) as three-time members of the Academic All-Patriot League Team.
Dorsel led the men's squad with 65 individual points this year. He finished fourth in the 200 IM, fifth in the 400 IM, and 13th in the 200 fly. His time of 1:47.10 in the 200 IM was a PR and the second-fastest in school history. He also ranks third in the 200 fly and fourth in the 400 IM in school history. Out of the water, Dorsel is a biology/microbiology major with a 3.60 cumulative grade-point average. Last summer he was a researcher at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. He was a member of Einstein's SURP program working in the microbiology and immunology department, where he studied the molecular mechanism of HIV-1 budding and release.
Dorsel and Kopac were both members of the 800 free relay that captured bronze medals and missed a school record by an agonizing .01 seconds. Kopac recorded 61 points this year, finishing sixth in the mile, seventh in the 200 free, and 13th in the 500 free. He also led off the 400 free relay that finished fourth with the second-best time in school history, this time just missing the school record by a mere .10. Kopac graduates with two First Team and two Second Team All-Patriot League citations, and he departs with the school record in the 200 free. Kopac is a business analytics major with a 3.88 GPA. He is a Freeman Fellow in the Freeman College of Management, a member of the Bison Finance Society, and a Bucknell Research Scholar.
Sunderhauf earned a Second Team All-Patriot League citation after scoring 60 points at the Patriot League Championships. She made A Finals in back-to-back events on the final day of the meet, finishing sixth in the 200 breaststroke and eighth in the 200 butterfly. She also placed 13th in the 400 IM.
Sunderhauf is an environmental studies and animal behavior double major with a 3.87 GPA. Last summer, she completed an internship with Defenders of Wildlife in their Anchorage, Alaska field office. She performed literature reviews on endangered beluga whales in Cook Inlet, interviewed participants of the electric fence program related to human-bear conflict mitigation, and promoted wildlife conservation through multiple outreach events with Alaskan communities. She also wrote an article about the growing threats facing belugas in Alaska, that's now published on the DOW site. She also interned with Call 2 Care in Cape Town, South Africa, where she strategized plans to increase their waterwise micro-farming solution to the global scale and developed a client database tool to standardize proposals for stakeholders. She serves as an ambassador for the Bucknell Center for Sustainability and the Environment (BCSE) and has also worked as a biology and chemistry study group facilitator and tutor.
The Bison women finished third and the men fourth in fields of 10 teams at this year's Patriot League Championships. Bucknell will be back in action this weekend with a contingent of swimmers competing at the ECAC Championships in Annapolis, Md.
